Assistant Telemetry Engineer information

What is an assistant telemetry engineer?

An Assistant Telemetry Engineer is a technical professional who supports the design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of telemetry systems. These systems are used to collect and transmit data remotely, often in industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, and telecommunications. The assistant works under the guidance of senior engineers to ensure accurate data transmission and system reliability. Their tasks may include configuring sensors, running diagnostic tests, and helping analyze performance data. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail are essential in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant telemetry engineer?

To thrive as an Assistant Telemetry Engineer, you need a strong background in electronics, signal processing, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with telemetry systems, data acquisition software, and tools like MATLAB or LabVIEW is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate data collection, system reliability, and seamless collaboration in technical teams.

What are some common challenges faced by assistant telemetry engineers during data collection and analysis?

Assistant Telemetry Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring data accuracy, managing large volumes of real-time data, and troubleshooting sensor malfunctions in the field. Working closely with senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams, they must quickly identify and resolve connectivity or calibration issues to maintain data integrity. Adapting to rapidly changing project requirements and learning new telemetry tools are also part of the role, which helps develop valuable problem-solving skills and technical expertise.

What is the difference between Assistant Telemetry Engineer vs Telemetry Engineer?

AspectAssistant Telemetry EngineerTelemetry Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; some certifications preferredBachelor's or master's degree; professional certifications advantageous
Work EnvironmentSupportive team setting, assisting with data collection and analysisLeading telemetry data analysis, system design, and troubleshooting
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in aerospace, automotive, and defense industries for entry-level rolesUsed in similar industries for more advanced telemetry system management
Search & Comparison IntentOften searched by those starting in telemetry or assisting rolesCompared by those seeking advanced telemetry engineering positions

In summary, an Assistant Telemetry Engineer typically supports telemetry systems with entry-level responsibilities, while a Telemetry Engineer handles more complex analysis and system design. The roles differ mainly in experience level, responsibilities, and scope of work, but both require similar educational backgrounds and industry experience.

Job description

About the Role:
Torc is developing Level 4 autonomous semi-truck software to transform how freight moves across the world. As a Software Engineer I on the Metrics & Release team, you will contribute to the cloud-based infrastructure that evaluates system performance and ensures software updates meet safety and reliability standards before deployment. This team owns the safety metrics, KPIs, and automated evaluation pipelines that enable scalable, production-grade autonomy. In this role, you will help build and maintain the systems that process vehicle telemetry and validation data, turning raw truck data into measurable signals used to evaluate system readiness. You will work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to support the development of metrics, validation workflows, and data pipelines that help ensure the safety and reliability of Torc's autonomous driving platform.
What You'll Do:
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of AWS-based data pipelines that process vehicle telemetry and validation data.
• Develop Python code and services supporting safety and performance metric computation.
• Assist in analyzing truck-generated data and translating it into measurable system signals.
• Support implementation of release validation logic tied to automated testing pipelines.
• Collaborate with systems, validation, and autonomy teams to help define meaningful KPIs and metrics.
• Investigate pipeline failures, data inconsistencies, and telemetry anomalies using logs and large-scale datasets.
• Support statistical analysis and reporting across validation and testing data.
• Participate in code reviews and collaborate with team members to deliver reliable, maintainable software.
What You'll Need:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field plus 0-4 years of relevant experience, OR Master's degree in a related technical field.
• Strong programming experience in Python.
• Familiarity with data processing, data pipelines, or working with large datasets.
• Basic understanding of cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS services such as S3, Lambda, ECS, or Step Functions.
• Basic understanding of statistics, data analysis, or metric computation.
• Ability to analyze system behavior through data and logs.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Nice to Have:
• Exposure to robotics, autonomous systems, or sensor data processing.
• Experience working with telemetry, event data, or time-series datasets.
• Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools such as Temporal, Airflow, or AWS Step Functions.
• Experience contributing to automated testing or validation pipelines.
• Experience working in safety-critical or high-reliability systems.
