Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Swim Coach provides a superior experience to members and program participants by assisting in leading swim team program in a safe and effective manner. The Assistant Coach will respond to member and guest needs, provide customer service, and maintain a safe aquatics environment.

AVAILABILTY:

The current open coaching position is with our Bronze group at the Central Clemson Rec Center. They practice in Central on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:30-4:30pm. Coaches would need to be available for all three days and potentially fill in with other groups when other coaches are unable.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepared to assist in coaching 11 & under in swim practice.
  • Greets and welcomes participants each day
  • Assist with multiple practice groups when needed.
  • Write workouts for 11 & under age groups
  • Work to provide a balance of fun and tough in daily workouts
  • Provide timely and accurate feedback to participants (or parents) about their progress and skills they need to work on.
  • Encourage swimmers in and out of pool.
  • Consults with Head Swim Coach to make sure participants are incorporating new skills and drills to keep them learning and growing.
  • Communicates with parents on progress and encourages meet and program participation.
  • Wears required uniform to convey a professional appearance.
  • Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants.
  • Handles and resolves concerns and informs supervisor of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
  • Leaves the area in a clean and orderly condition by ensuring all equipment is returned to its appropriate area.
  • Maintains required instructional certifications.
  • Works under direct supervision of the Swim Coach.
  • Attends mandatory swim meets, meetings, and in-services.
  • Reports to work on time and consistently.
  • Exemplifies YMCA character values.
  • Always maintains positive relations with members, participants, and co-workers.
  • Assists in all area of the Y operation as requested by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 17 years of age and have high school diploma or equivalent
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Oxygen certifications
  • Proficient in swimming and safety skills
  • Able to teach and communicate aquatics skills to participants.
  • Able to communicate and enforce policies and procedures to members, program participants, and guests.
  • Able to react quickly and properly in emergency situations.
  • Must have enthusiasm and possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Maintain CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer yearly
  • Maintain First Aid and Administering
  • Bloodbourne Pathogens/Child Abuse Prevention every year

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be mentally alert to dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all swimmers.
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR, Oxygen and First Aid effectively.
  • Must be able to physically stand and sit for an extended period of time.
  • Physically able to see, hear, and communicate clearly and be able to hear noises and distress signals in an aquatic environment
  • Able to read, write and perform basic math
  • Swim with proficiency and endurance for possible rescues.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with swimmers, parents and staff using Listen First skills.
