Qualifications and Detail about the Position
The Steam Tracer is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting steam tracing and associated piping systems within oil refineries, petrochemical plants, chemical facilities, and other industrial process environments. The position installs steam supply tubing, condensate return tubing, valves, traps, manifolds, fittings, and related components to maintain required process temperatures and protect piping and equipment from freezing.
The Steam Tracer must be capable of working safely in an active refinery environment while following site procedures, specifications, drawings, and applicable safety requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Install steam tracing tubing on process piping, valves, pumps, instruments, vessels, and other refinery equipment.
• Measure, cut, bend, route, and secure stainless steel, copper, and other approved tracing tubing.
• Install steam supply and condensate return tubing systems.
• Install tubing fittings, compression fittings, unions, valves, steam traps, manifolds, regulators, and associated components.
• Route tracing to provide proper coverage and heat transfer while maintaining appropriate spacing and contact with process piping.
• Install single-line and multiple-line steam tracing systems according to drawings and project specifications.
• Properly terminate steam tracing at supply manifolds, steam traps, condensate systems, and designated connection points.
• Identify and maintain proper tubing slope to promote condensate drainage and prevent water accumulation.
• Read and interpret piping drawings, P&IDs, isometric drawings, tracing drawings, specifications, and work packages.
• Field route tubing when detailed routing is not provided while maintaining accessibility, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
• Inspect existing steam tracing systems for leaks, damaged tubing, failed steam traps, plugged lines, improper routing, and other deficiencies.
• Troubleshoot steam tracing systems that are not providing adequate heat.
• Remove and replace damaged or deteriorated steam tracing components.
• Perform leak checks and assist with testing and commissioning of completed tracing systems.
• Coordinate tracing installation with pipefitters, insulators, scaffold personnel, operations, maintenance, and other crafts.
• Ensure tracing installation is completed before piping and equipment are insulated.
• Protect existing process piping, instrumentation, electrical systems, and equipment while performing work.
• Maintain good housekeeping and properly store tubing, fittings, tools, and materials.
• Perform work during refinery shutdowns, turnarounds, outages, maintenance projects, and new construction activities.
• Follow all refinery and company safety policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Previous industrial steam tracing, tubing, pipefitting, or related refinery experience preferred.
• Experience working in oil refineries, petrochemical facilities, chemical plants, or similar industrial environments preferred.
• Ability to properly bend and install small-bore tubing without kinking or damaging the tubing.
• Knowledge of compression fittings and proper tubing preparation and assembly.
• Basic understanding of steam and condensate systems.
• Ability to identify common steam tracing components, including steam traps, valves, manifolds, fittings, and tubing.
• Ability to read a tape measure and perform basic trade-related calculations.
• Ability to read and understand industrial drawings, specifications, and work packages.
• Ability to use tubing benders, cutters, hand tools, power tools, and other equipment associated with steam tracing installation.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-craft industrial construction or maintenance crew.
• Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions.

Working Conditions:
ORIENTATION - Must be able to successfully pass Brock and/or Safety Council Site Specific Orientation requirements.
HEAVY WORK - Lifting up to 50 pounds of force from the floor to the waist and 35 pounds of force from the waist to above shoulder.
CLIMBING - Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and the like, to elevations in excess of 100 feet, to maintain three-point contact at all times.
LADDERS - Using vertical ladders Frequently up to 100 feet - Activity exists up to 60% of the work shift.
STAIRS & RAMPS - Using stairs or ramps: Occasionally up to 100 feet - Activity exists up to 40% of the work shift.
BALANCING - Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, on unprotected elevated surfaces using fall protection equipment; or maintaining body equilibrium when performing scaffold construction at elevations using fall protection equipment. Frequently - Activity exists up to 60% of the work shift.
STOOPING - Bending body downward and forward by bending at the waist, requiring full use of the leg and back muscles on a repetitive basis. Frequently - Activity exists up to 60% of the work shift.
KNEELING - Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. Occasionally - Activity exists up to 40% of the work shift.
CROUCHING - Bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and waist. Frequently - Activity exists up to 60% of the work shift.
REACHING - Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in order to receive materials from ground level weighing up to 50 pounds as it is being passed and 35 pounds from overhead. Frequently - Activity exists up to 60% of the work shift.
GRIPPING - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands to receive materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling. Frequently - Activity exists up to 60% of the work shift.
VISION - Have 20/40 vision with or without correction in at least one eye.
HEARING - Must be able to hear a forced whispered voice in one ear, the better ear, at not less than five feet with or without the use of a hearing aid.
WEATHER EXPOSURE - Exposure to outside atmospheric conditions. Conditions can range from -10 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Constantly - Condition exists in excess of 60% of the work shift.
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT - Must be able to properly do all required personal protective equipment for the requirements of the job for up to the entire work shift.
