What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant software engineer?

To thrive as an Assistant Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), software development fundamentals, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic debugging tools, and common development frameworks is important. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication help you work efficiently within teams and adapt to evolving project requirements. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering quality code, learning quickly, and contributing to successful software projects.

What are some common challenges faced by assistant software engineers when joining a new development team?

Assistant Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to unfamiliar codebases, learning new technologies or frameworks used by the team, and understanding the team's workflow and communication practices. This position requires a strong background in modern software engineering practices, front-end and back-end development, cloud and on-premises deployments, CI/CD automation, and Agile development methodologies. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering, scientific and product management teams are essential.
Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain full-stack software solutions for commercial products.
  • Independently deliver features from concept through deployment with minimal supervision.
  • Serve as the technical backup to the Software Architect, participating in architectural planning, technology selection, and design reviews.
  • Contribute to software architecture and ensure solutions are scalable, maintainable, secure, and performant.
  • Develop front-end applications, back-end services, business logic, and database components.
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs and services
  • Collaborate with Product Management and stakeholders to define requirements and ensure customer needs are met.
  • Develop and maintain Software Design Requirements (SDRs) and technical documentation.
  • Participate in code reviews and promote software engineering best practices across the team.
  • Build and maintain automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment processes.
  • Support both cloud and on-premises deployment environments.
  • Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily standups, retrospectives, and sprint demonstrations.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams including software engineers, scientists, and product managers.

Required Technical Qualifications
Candidates should demonstrate strong experience in most of the following areas:
  • Modern software architecture and design patterns
  • Full-stack application development
  • C# and .NET Core/.NET
  • Angular and TypeScript
  • SQL Server and relational database design
  • Entity Framework or equivalent ORM technologies

  • Asynchronous programming using Tasks, async/await, multithreading, and concurrent programming techniques
  • RESTful API development and service-oriented architecture
  • Modern UI development practices
  • Automated unit and integration testing using frameworks such as xUnit or NUnit
  • Docker containerization
  • CI/CD pipeline implementation and DevOps practices
  • Git source control and collaborative development workflows
  • Networking fundamentals and distributed applications
  • Cloud platforms (Azure preferred) and on-premises deployments
  • Demonstrated experience developing production-quality software across the full technology stack.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, or similar) as an integral part of the software development workflow to accelerate development, automate engineering tasks, refine prompts, and improve code quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI-assisted and emerging agentic development workflows to enhance engineering productivity while exercising sound technical judgment and maintaining high standards for software quality, security, and maintainability.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and debugging skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a small, highly collaborative engineering team.
  • Ability to balance feature delivery with software quality, maintainability, and long-term architecture.
  • Deep knowledge of Microsoft technologies. Linux OS knowledge a plus

Required Qualifications
  • BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, including leading complex technical initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience developing production-quality software across the full technology stack.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and debugging skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a highly collaborative engineering team.

Working Conditions
  • Hybrid work environment with a required on-site presence of three (3) days per week. This is a mandatory requirement for the position.
