ALAMOSA COUNTY, Road & Bridge Department, Maintenance Tech I
REPORTS TO: Road & Bridge Director
FLSA STATUS:  Non-Exempt
SALARY RANGE:  $18.00-$19.50/hour DOE
DATE ADOPTED: May 2026
CLOSE DATE: Open until filled
JOB SUMMARY:
A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), preferably a Class A, is required for this position. Operates and maintains trucks to transport materials to and from specified destinations and operates other light trucks and equipment used in the maintenance of county roads. Job includes manual labor at least 50% of the time, 35% of the time driving trucks and equipment and 15% other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (The following are illustrative of essential functions to perform duties and responsibilities of the job. The position may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional tasks as needed by the Department. Reasonable accommodations, as defined under the American with Disabilities Act, will be made when possible.)
  • Operates tandem-axle trucks with snow plow and sander, tilt bed trailer, belly-dump trailer, small backhoe, and steel and rubber-tired rollers.
  • Operates other pieces of equipment than those regularly assigned as necessary as an on-the-job training experience.
  • Services and makes minor repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Inspects truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water.
  • Performs emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires, installing light bulbs, tire chains, and spark plugs.
  • Positions blocks and ties rope around items to secure cargo ensuring transit.
  • Performs manual work including spreading gravel, patching potholes, repairing or replacing culverts, fences, cattle guards, removing rocks, trees, and debris from roads and right of ways and trimming trees and brush.
  • Directs traffic at job sites when necessary.
  • May operate heavy equipment up to 25% of the time in a year.
  • May perform sign shop duties including laying out and fabrications signs.
  • Maintains truck log, according to state and federal regulations.
  • Maintains telephone or radio contact with supervisor to receive instructions when necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as required by the Road and Bridge Director.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  Knowledge:
  • Knows how to direct traffic at job sites.
  • Can maintain a truck log according to state and federal regulations.
  • Knows how to operate heavy machinery.
 Skills:
  • Can read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
   Abilities:
  • Ability to efficiently communicate in English, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CDL Class A Driver’s License required with no Air Brake Restriction “E” or “L” restricting a CDL holder from operating a commercial vehicle with Manual Transmission.

Covering various shifts, nights, weekends and holidays can be expected. Moderate to heavy physical requirements needed for snow removal and grounds maintenance. Ability to maneuver uneven terrain. Duties performed in all types of weather conditions, extreme cold, hot temperatures, high winds. Position requires the ability to perform manual labor including spreading gravel, patching potholes, repairing or replacing culverts, fences, cattle guards, removing rocks, trees, and debris from roads and right of ways and trimming trees and brush. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to sit, talk, walk, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, see, and hear. Hearing and vision correctable to normal ranges; close-up vision and the ability to adjust focus across a distance. The employee is required to communicate both orally and in writing. Employee must be able to reach and manipulate objects, tools or controls, drive, frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Employee must be able to work in an environment that can be very noisy.
