Job description

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a perioperative registered nurse who functions in an expanded role or an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) functioning as a first assistant The Registered Nurse First Assistant is responsible through nursing processes for providing and coordinating nursing care and resource management for patients and families in the operating room. RNFAs support the patient care team by performing various multifunctional patient care duties. Under the direct supervision and direction of the operating surgeon, the RNFA functions during the assisting phase of the role until the conclusion of the operative procedure. The RNFA does not function concurrently as a Scrub Nurse or Circulating Nurse.

Essential Job Functions/Accountabilities

Applies a systematic problem-solving approach in developing, implementing and evaluating nursing plans of care. Under the supervision and direction of the physician, the RNFA performs the following activities while acting in a First Assistant role:

Provides hemostasis by independently applying electrocautery and instrumentation directly to tissue or by suturing, application of tie ligatures and clips.

Provides site exposure of relevant areas though appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques. Assists by handling tissue in dissection and suturing utilizing appropriate instrumentation during operative procedure.

Performs wound closure of peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin.

Communicates pertinent information to the surgical team throughout all phases of the nursing process. Interprets clinical data/patient responses, collaborates with members of the health care team to provide comprehensive and coordinated patient care.

All other duties not specifically assigned.

Position Requirements

Education: Graduate of a school of Nursing. Completion of an accredited course in RN First Assisting required.

Experience: Three (3) to Five (5) years of demonstrated experience in field or profession preferred.

Technical Skills: N/A

Certifications/Licenses/Registrations: Current license to practice as registered nurse in the State of Ohio. Current CNOR certification required. BLS required. ACLS preferred.
