Department
The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art is located in Sarasota, Florida, and is a department of Florida State University. Learn more about The Ringling at https://www.ringling.org/about-ringling/careers/.
Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Head of Ringling Art Library Services, the Technical Services Librarian supports the long-term goals, policies, and procedures of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art Library (The Ringling), one of the largest fine arts library collections in the Southeastern United States. This position creates catalog records and other bibliographic descriptions for Art Library materials in all subject areas and formats, including monographs, serials, special collections materials and other printed materials. This position collaborates on the development and implementation of workflows, policies, and procedures to catalog effectively incoming and backlog library materials. Additionally, the incumbent oversees resource sharing such as Interlibrary Loan, and assists in collection management projects. Supervises volunteers and interns as needed.
  • Creates, updates, and maintains catalog records and other bibliographic descriptions for the Art Library materials in all subject areas and formats, including monographs, serials, special collections materials and other printed materials. Performs original and copy cataloging based on current standards. Collaborate with colleagues at The Ringling and FSU Libraries to ensure consistent metadata description to provide seamless access to the collections. Contributes to the development and implementation of workflows, policies, and procedures. Collaborate with colleagues in Cataloging & Metadata Department at FSU Libraries to catalog effectively within the shared catalog environment. Assist with cataloging newly purchased and donated items and processing materials for access by the Library's users. Under the supervision of the Head Librarian, assists in setting cataloging priorities to ensure effective cataloging of backlog and incoming Art Library materials.
  • Oversee the Art Library's sharing of resources with FSU, UBorrow+, and Interlibrary Loan. Resource sharing tasks include providing materials on behalf of The Ringling Art Library as well as working with lending libraries to loan materials for Ringling staff and users. Daily resource sharing tasks include working in OCLC WorldShare and Ex Libris Alma system to check items in and out, receive materials, ship materials, treat all loaned materials with care, ensure proper paperwork with items, review requests to borrow and lend library material, and resolve issues. Collaborate with colleagues at FSU Libraries to facilitate resource-sharing effectively. Work within the Ex Libris Alma system to lend and circulate Art Library materials to users.
  • Assist with setting and implementing collection management priorities and projects. Including but not limited to movement of materials, inventory, tracking, weeding, digitization, and processing materials. Collaborate with colleagues at The Ringling and FSU Libraries on developing collection management project workflows and implementation plans as needed.
  • Supervises, trains and gives directions to volunteers and interns. Assists with staffing the reference desk and assisting with researcher appointments as needed. Performs other duties and projects, as assigned, that support museum operations and provides general assistance.

Qualifications
  • MLIS/MA/MLS degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association
  • Valid Florida driver's license or the ability to obtain prior to hire
  • Ability to bend, reach high shelves, and lift up to 25 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years of work experience in a library environment, preferably an academic or specialized library
  • One or more years of cataloging experience
  • Working knowledge of current cataloging standards including MARC21, RDA, LCC, LCSH
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a collegial environment
  • Experience working with rare materials and collection security
  • Commitment to user-centered service
  • Record of successful performance in prior employment
  • Experience with:
    • OCLC Cataloging products, OCLC WorldShare and the Ex Libris Alma library system
    • Interlibrary loan or resource-sharing
    • Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, etc.)
    • Rare materials and collection security.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Use technology effectively; willingness to learn new technical skills quickly and adapt to new technologies
    • Take initiative, work independently and collaboratively, and solve problems
    • Develop written procedures and other documentation

Anticipated Salary Range
