Position Description:
The Network Engineer provides technical leadership for the comprehensive support of complex network and server operating system environments. The Network Engineer performs a wide-range of network-related duties, including the design, implementation, and maintenance of complex networks. The Network Engineer will take a lead role in the following areas: network and voice design, disaster recovery planning, capacity planning, network security, complex server and network configuration, network and voice administration and monitoring, upgrades, troubleshooting and maintenance on network related projects, including services over Internet Protocol (IP), such as audio, video, telephony and data. Incumbents possess a broad and in-depth knowledge of advanced computer networking principles, concepts and tools.
Experience Required This classification requires a minimum of four (4) years of broad, extensive, and increasingly responsible, full-time experience planning, designing, installing, and maintaining complete network infrastructure in a centralized IT organization with a high-availability environment. At least one (1) year of that experience must be in a lead capacity.
Skills Required:
The Network Engineer will have advanced skills in network monitoring tools and a comprehensive knowledge of protocols, emerging network technologies, network security, file servers, cable infrastructure, and topologies. They apply in depth knowledge to support network infrastructure such as e-mail, storage management, file and print services, routers, wireless access points, switches, firewalls, host access, network-related software, network management systems, network security appliances, Internet, voice networks, SIP phones and backup and disaster recovery services.
Bachelor's degree in an IT-related or Engineering field or a closely related field. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Skills Preferred:
Able to designs, plans and implement telecommunication systems such as audio video conferencing system, video surveillance system, public address system, voice over internet protocol telephone (VoIP), telecommunication site infrastructure and support system. Conducts engineering studies to determine if existing systems and equipment can be modified or expanded to meet present and future telecommunications needs of the County Departments or if a new telecommunications system is required. Develops cost estimates and designs based on general customer requirements and goal. Inspect constructions and installation of telecommunications equipment to ensure contractors conformance with the design plans and specifications. Prepares physical layout plans for telecommunication systems, site infrastructure and support systems and coordinate the installation of the required equipment.
Graduation from an accredited college with specialization in Electronic or Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or closely related field. One additional year of the required telecommunication engineering experience maybe substituted for each year of college.
