Job description

We are seeking a motivated Project Engineer to support the planning and execution of large-scale commercial electrical construction projects throughout the Detroit metropolitan area. This opportunity is ideal for someone with commercial construction or electrical contracting experience who wants to develop into a Project Manager.

Working closely with experienced Project Managers, Superintendents, and field leadership, you will support projects from preconstruction through final closeout while gaining hands-on experience with procurement, scheduling, cost tracking, project documentation, BIM/VDC coordination, and field operations.

Projects include hospitals, healthcare facilities, higher education campuses, industrial facilities, institutional buildings, and other technically complex commercial developments. This position provides exposure to every phase of electrical construction and offers a clear advancement path into Assistant Project Manager and Project Manager roles.

Responsibilities
  • Support commercial electrical construction projects from preconstruction and project kickoff through final completion and closeout.
  • Prepare, track, and manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, transmittals, procurement logs, and closeout documentation.
  • Review electrical drawings, specifications, contracts, scopes of work, schedules, and other project documents.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, electricians, subcontractors, vendors, suppliers, and general contractors.
  • Track material procurement, equipment deliveries, long-lead items, and critical project milestones.
  • Assist with project schedules, cost tracking, forecasting, billing, budget management, and financial reporting.
  • Attend project meetings, jobsite visits, and field coordination sessions.
  • Collaborate with BIM/VDC teams to identify coordination issues and support practical, constructible installation solutions.
  • Maintain accurate meeting minutes, project reports, logs, correspondence, and document control systems.
  • Assist with material takeoffs, procurement requirements, and project planning as needed.
  • Help identify and resolve field issues, procurement challenges, scheduling conflicts, and coordination questions.
  • Support Project Managers with change order documentation, cost tracking, and project forecasting.
  • Coordinate with field leadership to ensure crews have the drawings, materials, information, and resources needed to maintain production.
  • Assist with punch lists, commissioning documentation, project turnover, and final closeout activities.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in commercial construction, project engineering, or electrical construction.
  • Experience working for an electrical contractor, specialty contractor, or commercial subcontractor is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with commercial electrical construction methods, systems, and field operations is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of RFIs, submittals, change orders, procurement, scheduling, and construction project documentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, contracts, scopes of work, and construction schedules.
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and willingness to learn all aspects of electrical project management.
  • Comfortable working closely with both office-based project teams and field personnel.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines across active projects.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites throughout the Detroit metropolitan area.
  • Experience with healthcare, hospitals, universities, industrial facilities, institutional buildings, or other complex commercial projects is a plus.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities.
  • Comprehensive health benefits.
  • Retirement savings plan with company contribution.
  • Paid time off and company holidays.
  • Vehicle allowance where applicable.
  • Ongoing professional development and technical training.
  • Clear advancement path into Assistant Project Manager and Project Manager positions.
  • Direct mentorship from experienced electrical construction professionals.
  • Exposure to estimating, BIM/VDC, field operations, and project management.
  • Opportunity to work on large-scale, technically challenging commercial electrical projects.
  • Stable, long-term career opportunity with a growing electrical contractor.
