Job Posting: Designer / Drafter – Steel Fabrication     

Position Title: Estimator / Drafter 
Location: Wisconsin 
Job Type: Full-Time 
Reports To: Operations Manager 

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly organized professional to support fabrication operations through estimating and drafting coordination. This multi-functional role is responsible for developing accurate project estimates, coordinating drawings, and documentation.

The ideal candidate will have construction, structural steel, or bridge infrastructure experience and possess strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. 

Key Responsibilities

Estimating 

  • Review plans, specifications, and bid documents.  
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and material calculations.  
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates for fabrication and installation projects.  
  • Solicit and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.  
  • Assist in preparing proposals, bids, and contract pricing.  
  • Maintain estimating databases and historical cost records.   

Drafting & Design Coordination 

  • Coordinate preparation and review of shop drawings and fabrication drawings.  
  • Work with engineers, detailers, and customers to ensure drawing accuracy.  
  • Review drawings for constructability and compliance with project specifications.  
  • Manage drawing revisions and approval processes.  
  • Maintain project documentation and drawing records.  


Growth and Future Responsibilities

Logistics Coordination 

  • Schedule and coordinate material shipments and deliveries.  
  • Plan transportation of fabricated components to job sites.  
  • Coordinate with trucking companies, installation crews, and project stakeholders.  
  • Monitor shipping schedules to ensure timely project execution.  
  • Resolve transportation and delivery issues as they arise.  

Purchasing 

  • Procure raw materials, hardware, coatings, and subcontracted services.  
  • Issue purchase orders and track material deliveries.  
  • Negotiate pricing, lead times, and supplier agreements.  
  • Maintain relationships with vendors and suppliers.  
  • Monitor inventory requirements to support production and installation schedules.  

Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management, Mechanical Engineering, Project Management, or a related field preferred.  
  • 3+ years of experience in construction, structural steel, bridge construction, or related industries.  
  • Experience with estimating and drafting coordination.  
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, engineering plans, and specifications.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.  
  • Experience with CAD software is preferred, but training will be available. 
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and negotiation skills.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.  
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.  

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience with steel railing, highway infrastructure, structural steel, or miscellaneous metals projects.  
  • Knowledge of DOT specifications and public infrastructure projects.  
  • Familiarity with fabrication and installation processes.
