Assistant Project Architect information

What does an assistant project architect do?

An Assistant Project Architect supports senior architects in the planning, design, and execution of architectural projects. Their responsibilities often include creating drawings and models, coordinating with consultants, preparing documentation, and ensuring that project milestones are met on time. They also assist in site inspections and help resolve design or construction issues. This role is ideal for individuals developing their architectural skills and working towards full licensure.

How does an assistant project architect typically collaborate with senior architects and other team members during a project?

As an Assistant Project Architect, you will work closely with senior architects by supporting design development, preparing construction documents, and helping to coordinate project details with consultants and contractors. Collaboration is key in this role, with regular team meetings to discuss project progress, resolve design challenges, and ensure all deliverables meet deadlines and quality standards. You may also be involved in client presentations, gathering feedback, and integrating revisions, which provides valuable exposure to the full project lifecycle and opportunities to learn from more experienced professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant project architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Project Architect, you need a solid background in architectural design, construction documentation, and a degree in architecture or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Revit), 3D modeling tools, and understanding of building codes is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and manage project workflows. These abilities are crucial for ensuring high-quality design output, efficient project execution, and successful coordination with clients and contractors.

Job description

Project Architect ($90k-110k)

A well-established architecture and interiors firm with 15+ years of experience is seeking a Project Architect to join its Houston team. The firm delivers projects that serve communities across Texas and beyond, with work spanning education, healthcare, multifamily, mixed-use, commercial, and historic projects.

The firm is known for combining thoughtful design with budget-conscious execution and a highly personal client experience. As Project Architect, you will take ownership of active projects—turning design concepts into coordinated documents, keeping internal teams and consultants aligned, and helping projects move successfully through permitting and construction while protecting design intent, schedule, and budget.

Performance Objectives

  • Own projects from schematic design through construction documents across 2–4 concurrent projects, producing coordinated, permit-ready drawing sets.
  • Lead weekly internal coordination and consultant meetings to resolve clashes, code issues, and budget concerns before they affect the client or construction.
  • Drive client presentations and design reviews that result in clear decisions and keep projects aligned with schedule and fee expectations.
  • Mentor 1–2 junior staff members on documentation standards, detailing, Revit production, and client communication.
  • Support construction administration, including RFIs, submittals, site visits, and punch-list activities, while protecting the original design intent.
  • Assist with business development efforts by helping turn completed projects into case studies and supporting interviews for future work.

Environment & Resources

You will report directly to a Principal and work within a collaborative 11–50 person Houston studio offering architecture, interiors, planning, and construction management services.

The position provides access to Revit, established engineering and consultant relationships, and direct interaction with firm leadership on both design and client strategy.

The project mix includes education, healthcare, multifamily, commercial, historic, and interior projects, providing significant variety without the limitations of working as one small part of a very large project team.

Essential Qualifications

  • Licensed Architect, with Texas registration preferred.
  • 6+ years of architectural production and construction administration experience.
  • Experience with commercial, education, healthcare, multifamily, or similar project types.
  • Proven ability to take projects from schematic design through construction documents and construction administration.
  • Experience coordinating engineering consultants and producing complete, code-compliant construction documents.
  • Strong Revit production skills.
  • Comfortable presenting to clients, consultants, and public agencies.
  • Ability to mentor junior staff and maintain documentation, quality, and schedule standards across a project team.

Role Selling Points

  • True project ownership: Lead projects and client relationships rather than managing only one portion of a large team.
  • Diverse project portfolio: Work across education, healthcare, multifamily, commercial, historic, and interior projects throughout Texas and beyond.
  • Direct leadership access: Principals remain actively involved in design and client strategy.
  • Hands-on project involvement: Stay connected to projects from early design through construction.
  • Mid-size firm environment: Gain the resources of an established firm while maintaining visibility, responsibility, and influence over your work.

If you are looking for an opportunity to lead meaningful projects from early design through construction while working closely with clients, consultants, and firm leadership, this Project Architect opportunity offers the chance to take genuine ownership of your work and continue growing professionally. Apply to this job directly, or send an email to arman@architectsearchinc.com to learn more.
