Job Description
Position Summary
The Faculty Dentist serves as a clinician, educator, mentor, and academic leader within Marshall University's Department of Dentistry & Oral Surgery. This position provides comprehensive dental care in both ambulatory and hospital-based settings while actively participating in resident education, scholarly activities, and departmental initiatives. The Faculty Dentist is expected to maintain a high standard of clinical excellence, contribute to the academic mission of the institution, and engage in service activities that support the growth and reputation of Marshall University and Marshall Health Network.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
• Provide comprehensive dental services consistent with accepted standards of care.
• Diagnose and treat a broad range of oral health conditions.
• Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record.
• Participate in multidisciplinary patient care coordination with medical, surgical, and allied health providers.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, infection prevention, and patient safety requirements.
• Participate in quality improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives.
Resident and Student Education
• Provide direct clinical supervision and instruction to dental residents and students.
• Evaluate resident performance and provide constructive feedback to support professional growth.
• Participate in resident recruitment, orientation, competency assessments, and promotion reviews.
• Deliver lectures, seminars, workshops, and case-based educational sessions.
• Serve as a mentor and role model for residents and students in clinical professionalism and ethical practice.
• Assist in curriculum development and continuous improvement efforts.
• Participate in residency accreditation and program evaluation activities.
Hospital and Operating Room Responsibilities
• Provide dental care in the operating room setting for medically complex, special needs, pediatric, trauma, and other patients requiring hospital-based treatment.
• Collaborate with anesthesiology, nursing, oral surgery, and medical staff to coordinate perioperative care.
• Participate in hospital credentialing and maintain privileges as required.
• Support emergency and inpatient consultation services as assigned.
• Maintain competency in operating room protocols, patient safety standards, and hospital policies.
Faculty Engagement and Academic Responsibilities
• Serve as an active and engaged member of the Marshall University faculty.
• Attend departmental, faculty, committee, and institutional meetings.
• Participate in strategic planning, program development, and departmental initiatives.
• Contribute to the academic mission through teaching, scholarship, and service.
• Engage in community outreach and professional activities that enhance the visibility and reputation of the department.
• Foster an environment of collaboration, professionalism, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
Research and Scholarly Activity
• Participate in scholarly activities including clinical research, quality improvement projects, presentations, and publications.
• Support resident and student research efforts.
• Present scholarly work at local, regional, or national meetings when appropriate.
• Maintain awareness of emerging clinical and educational best practices.
