Job description

Job Title

The VA San Diego Healthcare System is one of the leading health care systems serving Veterans in the VA Desert Pacific Healthcare Network. We're an innovative care center within the Veterans Integrated Service Network 22 (VISN 22) VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.

VHA Physician Total Rewards:

The responsibilities include hands on clinical work, oversight, and administration of all aspects of the service, including an extensive research program and guidance and training for fellows, medical residents and other trainees.

Major duties include, but are not limited too:

  • Provides guidance and support to the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) assigned to Cardiology/Medicine Service in their respective areas of expertise.
  • Provides guidance and supervision for the medical students and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows) assigned to Medicine Service from the academic affiliate - UCSD.
  • Participates in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, as assigned by Chief of Cardiology.
  • Adheres to all information security and privacy measures set by VHA and the Medical Center.
  • Annually develops and evaluates professional and personal goals.
  • Identifies individual professional learning needs and participates in formal programs, seminars, conferences, as well as self-directed learning activities, completes facility wide mandatory education yearly.
  • The incumbent will ensure all actions comply with Veterans Health Administration guidelines for Cardiology Section of Medical Service.
  • Patients seen have a wide range of medical problems; the cardiologist will provide all clinical duties relating to the delivery of care for cardiology patients and report any discrepancies to the Section Chief and Chief of Medicine.
  • The incumbent is responsible for the daily administrative and clinical operations pertaining to their section/specialty of Cardiology Services, as assigned by the Section Chief.
  • Cardiology physicians will be required to round on consults on the Intensive Care Unit, acute medical and surgical wards and emergency room as appropriate.
  • Consistently demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi-symptomatic patients when clinical assignments so dictate.
  • The Cardiologist physician may need to respond to codes or other emergencies within the facility.
  • Must be available for "on call" as identified on the published schedule. "On call" is defined as the ability to be on station within one hour. On call Cardiology physician will provide coverage for "inpatient and emergencies". On call duties are typically divided among all available providers for the rotation.
  • Shifts are subject to change to ensure efficient use of medical center resources and appropriate levels of care are maintained.
  • Physicians may be assigned duty as a supervising or collaborating physician for an APP. Physicians are expected to provide clinical oversight and review. Supervising or collaborating responsibilities and performance will be noted in the physician's performance evaluation.
  • If applying as a Heart Failure specialist, specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Diagnose and manager a range of cardiomyopathies including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, amyloid, arrhythogenic, sarcoid, genetic and chemotherapy induced.
  • Perform endomyocardial biopsies.
  • Facilitate the transfer of end-stage hear failure patients for advanced therapies.
  • Provide consultative service for evaluation of heart transplant or left ventricular assist device.
  • Provide a supervisory role in ACGME accredited fellowship and residency programs.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 - 4:30
