A Middle School Girls Basketball Assistant Coach in a Tennessee public school supports the head coach in managing the basketball program while adhering to Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) and Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association (TMSAA) regulations. This role involves teaching fundamental basketball skills, strategy, and sportsmanship to female student-athletes. Assistant coaches must maintain flexible hours to accommodate practices, evening games, and weekend travel.Core ResponsibilitiesInstruction & Player Development: Lead practice drills focusing on basketball fundamentals, conditioning, and team defensive and offensive strategies. Game-Day Support: Assist the head coach with in-game adjustments, tracking player statistics, managing the bench, and supervising athletes.Student Supervision: Ensure student safety by supervising the team in locker rooms, during bus transit, and at both home and away venues.Compliance & Logistics: Enforce school academic eligibility policies, distribute equipment, and assist with inventory management.Character Mentorship: Promote sportsmanship, academic excellence, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle choices among athletes.After-Hours & Seasonal CommitmentsPractices: Attend daily after-school or early morning practice sessions throughout the winter sports season.Game Schedule: Travel to and from evening away games, and manage home game obligations, often extending into the late night.Tournaments: Commit to weekend tournament brackets, including district, regional, or TMSAA state-series events.Summer Programs: Assist with voluntary summer camps, open gym sessions, and conditioning workouts if required by the district.Qualifications & RequirementsEducation: Minimum of a High School Diploma or GEDCertifications: Must complete mandatory TSSAA / TMSAA Coaches Education Courses and NFHS training (including Concussion in Sports and Sudden Cardiac Arrest).Knowledge: Strong understanding of basketball rules, player positioning, and effective youth coaching techniques.
