Job description

Museum Assistant (PT) - Archives

Dearborn Historical Museum - Dearborn, MI 48124 Start Date 06/01/2026 End Date 06/11/2026

Salary Range $15.90 Hourly Position Type Part Time

Description

Hours: Part-time, up to 28 hours a week, with primarily day shift hours on the weekdays. Some evening, weekends and special event hours are required on occasion.

General Description:

An employee in this classification works under the direction of the Chief Curator or their designee. The employee in this classification works with the Chief Curator to help coordinate the digitization of Museum archival material and artifacts into the Museum's PastPerfect software database.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees digitization of Museum archival material and artifacts
  • Manages interns and other volunteers
  • Coordinates with Library and other City departments
  • Performs appropriate filing.
  • Gives tours of Museum buildings, when needed.
  • Help out at Museum events throughout the year.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Physical Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of general philosophy, principles and practices of history museums
  • Knowledgeable of digitization methods, scanning, and PastPerfect software
  • Knowledgeable of local and regional history as it applies to the Museum
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to approximately 25 lbs.
  • Ability to work in the presence of dust in storage areas
  • Must have basic keyboard and/or typing skills and ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other employees and the general public and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Experience and Training:

Some combination of experience related to museum archives, collections, or library collections. Must have minimum 1-3 years in museums, libraries, or similar institutions.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check (including sex offender registry if applicable) and a drug screen that tests for illegal drugs as defined by the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act but not those legalized under Michigan law prior to start date.
