The Academic Engagement Associate plays a key role in facilitating programs and fostering dialogue that advances the Haggerty Museum of Art’s pedagogic role at Marquette University. They work with higher education faculty from across all academic areas, including Nursing, Theology, History, English, Philosophy, Business, to customize class sessions at the museum, enabling deep, multi-disciplinary academic use of the Haggerty Museum of Art’s collections and exhibitions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain meaningful relationships with Marquette University faculty members and center directors whose work/interests align with Haggerty exhibitions and programs. Working with the Chief Curator, establish and maintain partnerships with university departments. Regularly communicate with Marquette faculty through meetings, by producing and distributing a faculty e-newsletter, and other means as needed.

Collaborate with Marquette faculty to lead and coordinate tours and design class sessions to take place at the Haggerty Museum of Art, highlighting Museum exhibitions or collections relevant to course goals. In support of this, coordinate with: Collections Manager and Preparator on any collection research or viewing; Chief Curator on exhibition-related tours; Operations team on set-up or A/V needs; and with other staff and University partners as needed. Manage class visits on shared museum calendars.

Working with the Chief Curator, collaborate with Marquette faculty on developing and implementing curricula, syllabi, and print and online learning resources that integrate the museum’s collections and exhibitions with Marquette University courses. Working in collaboration with the Chief Curator, develop and implement in-gallery interpretive tools to strengthen the engagement of university faculty and students with the museum’s collections and exhibitions.

Partner with the Center for Teaching and Learning, Marquette GROW programs, and individual departments on faculty and leadership development opportunities focused on object-based teaching and learning experiences, especially those aligned with Ignatian Pedagogy. Serve as liaison to Marquette University Student Government’s Art Club. Attend regular meetings, plan annual calendar of events, and host special Art Club events at the museum. Participate in Friends of the Haggerty events and the museum’s public programs, occasionally on evenings and/or weekends.

Develop and implement other customized tours, non-curricular sessions, and co-curricular offerings. These might include collaborations with Marquette University Student Government, Marquette’s Honors program and other areas for extra-curricular programs engaging Marquette University students (including evening and weekend social events); and collaborations with Marquette University’s Student Life, Student Affairs, and Admissions areas to develop and implement programs engaging future and current students.

Working with Chief Curator, develop, oversee and implement academically oriented public programs such as symposia, panel discussions, and lectures. Work with the Assistant Director, Business Affairs and the Marketing and Development Coordinator to ensure that programs are effectively promoted to target audiences, and work with Operations team to schedule and set up events.

Working in collaboration with the Assistant Director, Business Affairs, develop and implement outcome-based evaluation for all museum academic initiatives, such as post-event surveys, program assessments, and other feedback mechanisms.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Bachelor’s Degree in Art History or Museum/Curatorial Studies; or similar
• At least three years of directly related experience is required

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities           

• Master’s Degree in Art History or Museum/Curatorial Studies; or similar
• Curatorial/education experience in an academic museum is preferred
• Knowledge of art history, preferably focusing on areas represented in the museum’s collection or current exhibitions.
• Thorough and current knowledge of best practices in academic art museums.
• Experience developing cross-platform interpretive materials in a museum setting.
• Demonstrated, excellent research and writing skills.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills; solid presentation, negotiation, problem solving, conflict resolution, and meeting management skills.
