Assistant Microfabrication information

What are some typical challenges faced by Assistant Microfabrication professionals during the fabrication process?

Assistant Microfabrication professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining cleanroom protocols to prevent contamination, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and ensuring precise adherence to fabrication specifications. The role requires attention to detail when handling delicate materials and operating specialized machinery. Collaborating closely with engineers and senior technicians is common, especially when addressing unexpected process variations or optimizing workflow for high-yield production.

What are Assistant Microfabrication roles?

Assistant Microfabrication professionals support the fabrication and processing of micro-scale devices, often in cleanroom environments. Their tasks may include preparing materials, operating specialized equipment like photolithography and etching tools, and assisting engineers or scientists with experiments and quality control. They play a crucial role in research and manufacturing settings, ensuring the precision and cleanliness required for microfabrication. Typically, this position requires attention to detail, technical skills, and adherence to safety protocols.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Microfabrication Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Microfabrication Technician, you need a solid background in materials science, chemistry, or engineering, often supported by a relevant associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with cleanroom protocols, photolithography equipment, and software for process control is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and teamwork are vital soft skills for this position. These competencies ensure high-quality fabrication of micro-devices, adherence to safety standards, and efficient collaboration in research or production environments.

What is the difference between Assistant Microfabrication vs Microfabrication Technician?

Job description

About us

nEye.ai, a well-funded optical switch startup, is poised to revolutionize the future of data centers. nEye's MEMS-based silicon photonics optical circuit switches (OCS) eliminate critical bottlenecks in AI processing by enabling direct optical connections among thousands of GPUs and memory units. The company's OCS is an ultra-low power consumption, high radix, compact chip-scale design, offering hyperscale data centers enhanced performance, efficiency, and scalability.

Job Overview

As Silicon Photonics Designer at nEye.ai, you will be responsible for the development process for complex photonic devices and systems-on-chip, from design through fabrication, testing and analysis.  You will be an active participant in regular company strategy meetings, including addressing our chip manufacturing technology strategies. You will be successful if you thrive in a fast-paced environment, can participate in multiple work streams simultaneously, are passionate about solving problems and learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Taking a senior role in the photonics design team and collaborating with other groups to optimize chip design for product system-level requirements

  • Driving specific device designs and collaborating on fabrication methodologies.

  • Designing photonic components and photonic integrated circuits to advance our optical switch technology.

  • Developing, overseeing, and performing photonic component and system-level testing.

  • Working cross-functionally with system and fabrication team members to develop improved optical switch capabilities.

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, Chemistry, or a related technical discipline.

  • 5+ years hands-on experience with Si Photonics in an industrial setting.

  • Strong understanding of microfabrication processes and related constraints on photonic component designs.

  • Strong understanding and proficient experience of photonic component simulation tools such as FDTD, EME, FEM, or FIT.

  • Strong proficiency in Python.
  • Experience with photonic integrated circuit layout and photonics foundry tape-out.

  • Experience with designing and executing detailed photonic device experiments and characterization protocols.

  • Strong communication skills in collaboration, verbal presentation, and written reports.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and oral), and leadership skills.

  • Deep familiarity using AI tools (e.g., LLMs, copilots) to accelerate engineering workflows, debugging, and problem-solving.
$175,000 - $250,000 a year
Starting salary and title will depend on, and be commensurate with, relevant experience, skills, training, education, market demands, and the ultimate job duties and requirements.
