Job description

Job Title: NGS Laboratory Scientist
Location: Indianapolis, IN
Duration: 6+ Months
Interview Type: In-Person Only
Rate: $31/hr on 1099 (All Inclusive)
Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Microbiologist to support operations within an Enteric and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) Laboratory. The selected candidate will perform microbiological and molecular testing on clinical specimens to detect and identify enteric pathogens. This role requires strong laboratory experience, knowledge of molecular biology techniques, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform microbiological and molecular testing including culture, biochemical testing, EIA, serotyping, PCR, sequencing, and whole genome sequencing (WGS)
  • Isolate and identify enteric pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, Shigella, Vibrio, Listeria, and Campylobacter
  • Conduct nucleic acid extraction using manual and automated methods
  • Operate laboratory instruments and technologies including PCR, MALDI-TOF, sequencing platforms, and WGS systems
  • Process, analyze, interpret, and validate laboratory test results
  • Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and records in compliance with CLIA standards
  • Perform quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) procedures and document findings
  • Support inventory management and laboratory supply monitoring
  • Assist with epidemiological data collection and reporting
  • Participate in proficiency testing and maintain competency in assigned laboratory areas
  • Troubleshoot testing issues and escalate concerns when necessary
  • Collaborate with laboratory staff, internal teams, and public health partners
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, or related scientific discipline
  • Minimum 2 years of laboratory experience preferred
  • Experience working in a molecular biology or clinical laboratory environment preferred
  • Strong understanding of microbiology principles, laboratory procedures, and safety standards
  • Familiarity with CLIA regulations and high-complexity laboratory testing
  • Experience handling laboratory instrumentation and scientific equipment
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and documentation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
Work Environment
  • Hands-on work with potentially hazardous biological specimens
  • Strict adherence to PPE and laboratory safety protocols required
  • Laboratory environment may involve variable temperatures and physically demanding tasks requiring precision and focus

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high accuracy
