Job description

For over 75 years, Catholic Family and Community Services, has provided at little or no cost, a full spectrum of services to individuals who are oppressed, families who are in crisis and communities who are disenfranchised.

Located throughout the New Jersey Counties of Passaic, Morris and Sussex, we provide professionally based social services, including Behavioral Health Programs, Veterans Services, Children’s Programs, Senior and Aging Services and much more.

Assistant Teacher (El Mundo de Nino)

Hours: (Monday - Friday 8:00am - 3:00pm) (10 Months)

Location: Paterson NJ

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The classroom assistant teacher must ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times and be alert to the needs and concerns of the children as individuals and as a group. The assistant teacher must work in collaboration with the classroom teacher, family worker, and program director to properly implement learning activities and adhere to all licensing and district requirements.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for maintaining a high-quality learning environment in accordance to Board of Education (BOE), Office of Licensing (OOL), and National Association of Young Children (NAEYC) requirements.
  2. Maintain classroom equipment, curriculum materials and supplies.
  3. Assist classroom teacher in implementing the daily program as outlined in the lesson plans and class schedule including rest and mealtimes. Maintain line-of-sight supervision throughout the school day.
  4. Provide reinforcement of learning and social emotional skills throughout the school day.
  5. Encourage and participate in planned parental involvement activities within the classroom/school community including but not limited to attending Back to School Night/Open Houses, parent workshops, trainings, field trips and volunteering.
  6. Work cooperatively as a team member within the classroom, individual grade level, inter-grade levels and the entire school community.
  7. Work cooperatively with classroom teacher to support and reinforce the learning process including organizing the learning environment, preparation of materials and assisting with assessment.
  8. Work cooperatively with BOE personnel to support learning by implementing recommendations and attending required trainings.
  9. Adhere to Catholic Charities Diocese of Paterson, Office of Licensing and BOE policies and procedures regarding program implementation and health and safety requirements.
  10. Report any suspected case of child abuse to the appropriate authorities as outlined in the Employee Handbook and School District Guidelines.
  11. Responsible to report in writing any accident or unusual occurrence to the Program Director, or the Director’s Designee, before the end of the scheduled workday.
  12. Inform Program Director, or Director’s Designee, of classroom safety, and or maintenance need.
  13. Attend scheduled workshop/trainings and pursue professional development hours in accordance with agency, program, Office of Licensing, and Board of Education requirements.
  14. Attend classroom observation follow-up meetings and staff evaluations.
  15. Attend monthly staff meetings approximately one hour in length which may be held outside of regularly scheduled work hours.
  16. Assist as needed to ensure the health and safety practices of the Office of Licensing and Board of Education are properly adhered to at all times.
  17. Carry out additional tasks as requested by the Program Director, Director’s Designee.
  18. Responsible for other duties that may be assigned from time to time to support the effective and efficient operation of Catholic Charities.

REMOTE LEARNING RESPONSIBILITES:

In the event of an extended building closure and the need to continue instruction virtually:

  1. Assist classroom teacher in implementing the PPS BOE remote daily schedule and remote learning lesson plan.
  2. Assist classroom teacher in creating assignments to supplement the PPS BOE remote learning lesson plan as needed.
  1. Support parents/guardians as "educational facilitators" and encourage student participation.
  2. Maintain availability throughout your regularly scheduled hours.
  3. Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings via video conference.
  4. Safeguard school technology/equipment and return upon resumption of in-classroom instruction.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A minimum of Child Development Associate Certificate or in the process of receiving one in a timely manner. Associate Degree, or sixty credits in Early Childhood Education, preferred.
  2. Passaic County Substitute Certification a plus.
  3. Knowledge of child development and skills in curricula areas a must.
  4. Effective oral and written English skills.
  5. Bilingual Spanish, Arabic, and/or Bengali oral and written skills a plus.
  6. Computer literacy skills required.
  7. Must possess effective comprehension and reasoning skills.
