Assistant Head School information

What is an assistant head school?

An Assistant Head in a school supports the Headteacher in leading and managing the school. Their responsibilities often include overseeing specific academic departments, managing staff, supporting student welfare, and helping to implement school policies. They may also handle discipline issues, contribute to curriculum planning, and act as a key point of contact between teachers, students, and parents. The role requires strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Assistant Heads play a crucial role in ensuring the school runs smoothly and maintains high educational standards.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an assistant head school?

To thrive as an Assistant Head in a school, you need strong leadership abilities, experience in teaching, and relevant educational qualifications such as a teaching degree and often further leadership training. Familiarity with school management systems, data analysis tools, and educational policies is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills help in motivating staff and fostering a positive school culture. These competencies are crucial for supporting the school's vision, driving improvement, and ensuring effective teaching and learning outcomes.

What challenges does an assistant head school face when balancing administrative duties with supporting teaching staff?

Assistant Heads often juggle a variety of responsibilities, including managing school operations, supporting classroom teachers, and implementing curriculum initiatives. One of the main challenges is finding the right balance between administrative tasks—such as scheduling, compliance, and policy enforcement—and providing mentorship and support to teaching staff. Effective time management and strong communication skills are essential for addressing staff needs while ensuring that school objectives are met. Successful Assistant Heads foster a collaborative environment, enabling teachers to thrive while keeping daily operations running smoothly.

Job description

Position Description

Faith Christian Academy is a growing Christian, classical school serving approximately 400 students (PK–12) in a collaborative, family‑engaged model. As the school continues to mature, we are seeking an Assistant Head of School to partner closely with the Head of School in strengthening daily operations, faculty effectiveness, and organizational execution.

This is a hands‑on leadership role for someone who thrives on turning vision into systems, supporting people, and ensuring the school runs smoothly and excellently day to day.

The Role

The Assistant Head of School serves as the operational leader of the school, translating the Head of School’s vision into effective execution across academics, staffing, and school systems. This role is ideal for a leader who is both relational and highly organized—someone who can manage details without losing sight of mission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily school operations, including scheduling, calendars, and internal coordination
  • Ensure smooth functioning of school systems, policies, and routines
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement practical improvements
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of faculty/staff
  • Assist in faculty evaluation and performance management processes
  • Provide coaching and accountability to ensure instructional quality and alignment
  • Partner with the Head of School to ensure consistent execution of the classical curriculum
  • Assist in monitoring academic progress and classroom effectiveness
  • Help maintain standards of excellence in teaching and student outcomes
Culture & Community
  • Reinforce a positive, Christ‑centered school culture among staff, students, and families
  • Address day‑to‑day personnel or student issues with wisdom and consistency
  • Serve as a visible, approachable leader within the school community
  • Execute strategic initiatives as directed by the Head of School
  • Support enrollment, retention, and family communication efforts
  • Help align operations with long‑term school goals
Qualifications
  • A clear, mature Christian faith consistent with the FCA’s Statement of Faith
  • Active participation in a local church
  • A commitment to discipling students and supporting a Christ‑centered educational environment
  • 3–7+ years of leadership experience in a school or comparable organization
  • Demonstrated ability to manage operations, systems, or teams effectively
  • Experience supporting or evaluating staff is strongly preferred
Skills & Traits
  • Highly organized and execution‑oriented
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to balance structure with flexibility in a dynamic school environment
  • Problem‑solver who takes initiative and follows through
  • Alignment with and enthusiasm for classical Christian education
Why This Role Matters

This position is essential to the health and effectiveness of the school. By strengthening operations and supporting faculty, the Assistant Head of School enables the Head of School to focus on vision, growth, development, and external leadership.

This role offers meaningful influence on school culture, academic quality, and organizational excellence—and provides a strong pathway for future senior leadership.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary
  • Tuition remission for children of faculty
  • Health Benefits
  • Professional development opportunities
