Assistant Football Coach
Position Purpose
Under the direction of the Head Football Coach and the Athletic Director, the Assistant Football Coach supports the planning, organization, and implementation of the football program. The assistant coach works with student-athletes to develop fundamental skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, and character while supporting the overall goals of Buena Vista City Public Schools athletics.
Reports To
Athletic Director, in conjunction with the High School Principal and Head Football Coach.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to assist in organizing and supervising a secondary-level football program
  • Previous coaching experience in football or a related sport preferred
  • Knowledge of football fundamentals, strategies, rules, and safety practices, including concussion awareness and proper tackling/blocking technique
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, and community members
  • Commitment to professional growth and continuous learning
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model and mentor for student-athletes

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists the Head Coach in implementing the philosophy, goals, and objectives of the football program
  • Provides instruction in fundamental skills, position techniques, team concepts, and game strategy
  • Supports supervision of student-athletes during practices, games, and travel
  • Promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, self-discipline, and positive character development
  • Monitors student-athlete academic progress and conduct
  • Communicates team rules, expectations, and procedures to student-athletes
  • Assists with injury prevention, emergency procedures, and required documentation
  • Supports supervision of student managers and statisticians as assigned
  • Performs duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or Principal

Administrative Responsibilities
  • Assists with scheduling, transportation, and coordination of games, scrimmages, and special events
  • Helps prepare athletic facilities and ensures adherence to assigned schedules
  • Assists with required documentation related to eligibility, physical examinations, and parental consent
  • Supports care, maintenance, and security of athletic equipment and facilities, including proper fitting and inspection of protective equipment
  • Provides recommendations and feedback to the Head Coach and Athletic Director as requested

Student Supervision and Safety
  • Maintains appropriate supervision of student-athletes at all times
  • Ensures students remain in authorized areas during practices, games, and events
  • Assists with implementation of safety procedures, injury response, and emergency protocols, including heat-illness and concussion protocols
  • Promotes respect for school property, facilities, and equipment

Public Relations and Communication
  • Assists with preseason meetings for parents and athletes
  • Supports positive relationships with parents, officials, booster organizations, and community members
  • Communicates professionally and appropriately when representing BVCPS athletics
  • Assists with sharing schedules, results, and program information as directed

Terms of Employment
  • Seasonal position; stipend paid in accordance with the BVCPS athletic coaching stipend schedule
  • Employment contingent upon School Board approval
  • Employment contingent upon completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check and a Department of Social Services (DSS) Child Protective Services background check, in accordance with Virginia law and BVCPS policy
  • Completion of all required VHSL and division-mandated training
