Job description

Work schedule is Monday - Friday, 4pm - 7pm and Saturday, 8am - 1pm Under general supervision, teaches gymnastics classes. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from Gymnastics Instructor I or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience. Level and starting salary will depend upon the successful candidate's education, knowledge, experience, and certifications.

Gymnastics Instructor I: This is the entry-level class in the Gymnastics Instructor series. Incumbents entering this class have no or very limited work-related experience. Gymnastics Instructor II: This is the journey-level class in the Gymnastics Instructor series.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.) Assists with set-up, tear-down, preparation, and planning of gymnastics classes. Assists level II Instructors in teaching tot through beginner gymnastics classes through games, movement, dance and songs

Performs light spotting of children working on basic gymnastics skills on the floor, bars and beam in a circuit environment. Ensures all possible safety measures are observed. Communicates and enforces facility and class policies and procedures.

Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate accident and incident reports. Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants and/or parents to answer questions and resolve problems. Reports any issues and concerns to supervisor.

Complies with city and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures. Substitutes for Instructors at the same level as needed. Organizes and supervises children's parties at one of the city's recreational facilities.

Sets up and decorates prior to parties; and cleans up after parties. Performs other duties as assigned. Gymnastics Instructor II: In addition to previous requirements: Performs appropriate spotting of gymnasts.

Responsible for the set-up, tear-down, preparation, and planning of gymnastics classes. Instructs tot through pre-teen level gymnastics classes including warm-up, stretching, games, and leading songs. Assists non-competitive gymnastics class in structured format for the proper progression of child development gymnastics.

May assist Gymnastics Coaches at team practices. QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience: Gymnastics Instructor I: Must be at least 15 years of age. Previous experience as a competitive gymnast or gymnastics teaching experience in a recreation setting or a private club is preferred.

Gymnastics Instructor II: In addition to previous requirements: Two years of gymnastics teaching experience in a recreation setting or a private club or one year of experience as a city of Thornton Gymnastics Instructor I. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Gymnastics Instructor I: Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department. Knowledge of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer and first aid.

Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid activities. Ability to be trained in the basics of gymnastics instruction. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.

Ability to effectively lead and coordinate gymnastic classes. Ability to demonstrate gymnastic skills. Ability to provide the necessary spotting at each level.

Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures. Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations. Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with the public.

Ability to promote and provide quality gymnastic classes. Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations. Gymnastics Instructor II: In addition to previous requirements: Ability to teach a non-competitive gymnastics class in a structured format for the proper progression of child development in gymnastics.

Ability to lead a non-competitive gymnastics class in stretching, games, songs, and gymnastics activities that are age appropriate. Ability to substitute for other Instructors. Licensing/Certification Requirements: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certificates, or the ability to obtain both within 30 days of hire.

May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires. Gymnastics Instructor I: Must attend a city of Thornton "Basic Spotting" and "Basic Skills" class within 60 days of hire. Gymnastics Instructor II: Must attend a city of Thornton "Intermediate Spotting" and "Intermediate Skills" class within 60 days of hire.

Prior to teaching higher levels, must attend a city of Thornton "Advanced Spotting" and "Advanced Skills". Physical and Mental Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, sit, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, talk, hear, and make repetitive motions. This position is considered medium or heavy work depending on the assignment; exerting up to 50 or 100 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 30 or 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions. The employee may be subject to environmental and atmospheric conditions, as well as loud noise. TESTING PROCEDURES Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.
