Assistant Guide information

What is an assistant guide?

Assistant guides are individuals who support lead guides in organizing and conducting tours or outdoor activities. They help with group management, safety, logistics, and sharing information with participants. Assistant guides often assist in preparing equipment, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and providing customer service. Their role is vital in enhancing the overall experience for guests and supporting the main guide throughout the activity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant guide?

To thrive as an Assistant Guide, you generally need knowledge of the local environment, basic first aid certification, and experience in outdoor activities relevant to the tours offered. Familiarity with GPS devices, radio communication tools, and booking or scheduling software is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, clear communication, and problem-solving abilities help in managing groups and ensuring guest safety and satisfaction. These competencies are crucial for providing a safe, informative, and enjoyable experience for clients in diverse and sometimes unpredictable outdoor settings.

What are some typical challenges an assistant guide may face during group excursions, and how can they be managed?

Assistant Guides often encounter challenges such as managing diverse group dynamics, ensuring guest safety, and adapting to changing weather or unexpected situations on excursions. Effective communication, strong situational awareness, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential for managing these challenges. Building rapport with guests and maintaining close coordination with the lead guide help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Gaining experience and learning from seasoned guides also prepares Assistant Guides to handle these situations more confidently over time.

Job description

 Lead Guide Wilder

Las Vegas, NV | Full-Time /part time available

We’re hiring for two roles: Lead Guide and Assistant Guide. Both require the same heart, values, and passion for working with children. The difference is simply the level of leadership and responsibility.

Help Build a Different Kind of Learning Community

Not every child is meant to learn by sitting still, memorizing information, and preparing for the next test.

At Wilder, we believe children deserve the freedom to explore, create, ask questions, solve real problems, and develop into confident, capable, independent thinkers.

We’re building a learning community where curiosity is protected, creativity is celebrated, movement is encouraged, and relationships come before rigid systems.

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “There has to be a better way,” you might be exactly who we’re looking for.

This isn’t a traditional teaching position. We’re not looking for someone to manage a classroom. We’re looking for someone who genuinely enjoys children, believes in their potential, and wants to help them discover what they’re capable of.

About Wilder

Wilder is a small, independent learning community in Las Vegas serving learners ages 6 and up.

Our days are built around project-based learning, outdoor exploration, entrepreneurship, art, movement, STEM, life skills, creativity, and real-world experiences. We intentionally keep our community small, with no more than 15 learners per campus .

We believe education should develop thinkers, creators, problem-solvers, leaders, and good humans, not simply prepare children to pass tests.

What You’ll Do

  • Guide a mixed-age community of up to 15 learners.
  • Facilitate hands-on projects, outdoor adventures, creative experiences, and real-world learning.
  • Foster curiosity, confidence, resilience, and critical thinking.
  • Build meaningful relationships with learners and their families.
  • Help children navigate challenges with patience, encouragement, and respect.
  • Collaborate with the Founder to help shape Wilder’s culture, traditions, and daily experiences.
  • Create an environment where children feel safe to ask questions, take healthy risks, and think for themselves.

Who You Are

You don’t have to be a traditional educator.

In fact, many exceptional Guides come from backgrounds like coaching, outdoor education, youth programs, performing arts, child development, mentoring, homeschooling, entrepreneurship, camps, or simply years of meaningful experience working with children.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Naturally connects with children.
  • Leads with kindness, patience, and emotional maturity.
  • Believes curiosity is more important than compliance.
  • Enjoys being outdoors and staying active.
  • Loves creating, building, exploring, and learning alongside children.
  • Is flexible, resourceful, and comfortable adapting throughout the day.
  • Sees children as capable individuals deserving of respect.
  • Wants to help build something meaningful from the ground up.

Teaching certification is not required.

What We Offer

  • A small learning community where relationships matter.
  • Competitive compensation based on experience.
  • Monday through Friday daytime schedule.
  • Opportunity to help build Wilder from the very beginning.
  • A collaborative environment where your ideas are valued.
  • The chance to do meaningful work that genuinely impacts children’s lives.

Location

Las Vegas, Nevada (near Town Square)

How to Apply

Instead of a formal cover letter, tell us about a child you’ll never forget and what made them memorable.

We’re looking for people who believe children don’t need to fit into outdated systems. They need trusted adults who challenge them, encourage them, and give them the freedom to become who they’re meant to be.
