Familiarity with GPS devices, radio communication tools, and booking or scheduling software is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, clear communication, and problem-solving abilities help in managing groups and ensuring guest safety and satisfaction. These competencies are crucial for providing a safe, informative, and enjoyable experience for clients in diverse and sometimes unpredictable outdoor settings.

Assistant Guides often encounter challenges such as managing diverse group dynamics, ensuring guest safety, and adapting to changing weather or unexpected situations on excursions. Effective communication, strong situational awareness, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential for managing these challenges. Building rapport with guests and maintaining close coordination with the lead guide help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Gaining experience and learning from seasoned guides also prepares Assistant Guides to handle these situations more confidently over time.

The Role:

Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge is launching a brand-new outdoor guest experience program, and we’re looking for a full-time, year-round Adventure Guide to help bring it to life as part of our Adventure & Experiences Department.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of something new - shaping how our guests explore and experience the natural beauty of Kananaskis Country. You’ll deliver exceptional guided hiking experiences for hotel guests while contributing to the ongoing growth of a program that showcases the surrounding mountains, wildlife, and landscapes.

If you thrive in outdoor environments and enjoy being part of something evolving, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to a program with real purpose and impact.

Reporting to the Adventure & Experiences Assistant Manager, the primary responsibilities are:

  • Support the design and delivery of a new adventure and interpretive experiences program, including hiking logistics, seasonal programming, and operational setup.
  • Act as a brand ambassador for Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge and its connection to Kananaskis Country, delivering exceptional guest experiences through guided hikes and interpretation of the region’s natural beauty, wildlife, and landscapes.
  • Ensure guest safety through strong risk assessment, preparation, effective group leadership, and sound judgment in changing weather and trail conditions.
  • Adapt experiences to varying guest abilities, interests, and fitness levels through clear pre-hike briefings and attentive service, creating memorable and personalized experiences for families, couples, leisure travelers, and corporate groups.
  • Drive lodge vehicles (Class 4 license required) for guest transport to and from trailheads, ensuring daily vehicle checks and prompt reporting of any issues.
  • Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability: Follow all Alberta Parks regulations and lodge safety protocols while promoting Leave No Trace principles and responsible recreation in Kananaskis Country.
  • Support setup, daily operations, and wrap-up of guided hikes, including maintaining outdoor guiding equipment.
  • Collaborate with Adventure & Experience, Front Office, and Leadership teams to support and deliver a seamless guest experience.
  • Partner with Sales & Events teams to support private group experiences, corporate programming, and team-building activities.
  • Work with Marketing to support content creation, including photography opportunities, storytelling, and social media moments that showcase the guest experience.
  • Contribute ideas to enhance programming through guest feedback and field insights.
  • Support the Guest Activities and Pool teams with day-to-day operations as needed throughout the season and during quieter operational periods.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
  • Current and in good standing Interpretive Guides Association (IGA) Certification.
  • CPR/AED certification.
  • Valid Class 4 driver’s license.
  • Experience in hiking, guiding, or outdoor interpretation.
  • Previous customer service and hospitality experience are considered an asset.
  • Wilderness First Responder (preferred but not required).
  • Bear Awareness Training or equivalent (preferred but not required).

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lead and participate in outdoor activities for extended periods in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, and snow).
  • Comfortable hiking on uneven terrain, including inclines, trails, and wilderness areas.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain active for the majority of scheduled shifts.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and transport equipment weighing up to 25–40 lbs (e.g., activity gear, safety equipment) while adhering to safe lifting techniques and occupational health and safety guidelines.
  • Strong situational awareness with the ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Comfortable working at varying altitudes and in remote outdoor environments.
  • Ability to remain physically active throughout the shift, including extended periods of standing, walking, snowshoeing, and other outdoor activities as required.
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Amazing Perks:

  • Enjoy full access to company-provided gear, equipment and outdoor uniforms for all guiding activities.
  • Be part of a growing outdoor guiding program in the heart of Kananaskis.
  • Marriott Bonvoy Employee Travel Program offering discounted room rates and food & beverage privileges at participating Marriott International properties worldwide.
  • Personal days: 5 per year after 90 days of continued full-time employment.
