Security Guard

Employer: Skagit Valley College

Salary: $20.80 Hourly

Location: Mount Vernon Campus, Mount Vernon, WA

Job Type: Temporary

Position Summary: The Opportunity: Security Guards provide a customer service-focused approach to safety and security as members of the campus community. Helping others is the Security guard's contribution to the College. Additionally, Security Guards provide a visible presence, active protection, and security to the College, buildings, grounds, employees, students, and visitors. Guards patrol campus and maintain order through the application and enforcement of applicable laws, rules, orders, and ordinances where applicable. Security Guards assist local first responder agencies in their performance of routine and emergency operations on campus. Campus Security Officers document actions and observations in logs, reports, and other methods of communication. This is a part-time, hourly position, working a variety of shifts, covering shifts at various times across 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Work days and hours may vary based on the needs of the department. Temporary positions may only work 1050 hours or 12 consecutive months from the date of hire, whichever comes first (WAC 357-04-045). The exact schedule will be worked out with the candidate selected for hire.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Patrols buildings and grounds by foot and/or vehicle and two-way radio;
  • Enforces security rules and policies and rules of behavior; logs incidents in records and/or into a computer;
  • Patrols and inspects buildings and grounds to detect and prevent fire, theft, illegal entry, and property damage; examines gates, doors, and windows to ensure security;
  • Monitors vehicles in parking areas to prevent vandalism or theft; responds to situations of stolen property, accidents, parking incidents, and other disturbances or situations; recommends parking citations; reports illegal entry to law enforcement and campus security; reports disturbances and other incidents to law enforcement as necessary; secures areas until authorities arrive; assists law enforcement personnel upon request;
  • Receives lost property found on campus; receives complaints, obtains statements, and conducts preliminary investigations; intervenes in personal and property risk incidents to diffuse situations;
  • Controls access to buildings; opens buildings close and locks at the end of business or shift;
  • Performs parking enforcement duties;
  • Completes daily shift logs and security reports, inspection reports, and other documents as needed; processes maintenance work orders;
  • Answers the security phone line and responds to calls for service;

  • Activate security alarm systems after securing buildings;
  • Respond to all fire, intrusion, and system monitoring alarms;
  • Provides assistance to campus visitors and guests;
  • Receive and sign for registered mail and other deliveries made after normal working hours;
  • Walk staff or students to parking lots, classrooms, or other campus facilities upon request;
  • Report needed repairs and safety hazards to appropriate personnel;
  • May be required to perform first aid;
  • Safely operate Security vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position, such as but not limited to lifting 25 pounds or less, walking and standing for long periods of time, and turning keys repetitively.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license;
  • High school graduation or GED and one year of experience in areas of work such as: security guard, correctional officer, store investigations, or police officer, police reserve officer, military police, or other law enforcement work;

OR

  • A certificate of completion in a basic law enforcement training program approved by the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission; or, a certificate of completion in a police or reserve police academy or military training program;

OR

  • High school graduation or GED and experience as a person responsible for emergency response and supervision of others in a workplace.
