Job description

The City of Lawndale THE HEART OF THE SOUTH BAY. Position Summary Under the direction of the City Engineer, performs entry level professional engineering work related to the execution of project activities and contract administration; may oversee contract compliance activities as they relate to construction contract projects; and to prepare plans, specifications, progress reports and other engineering materials. Assists with capital improvement project management and administration.

Duties and Responsibilities Essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Assists in the planning, designing, and preliminary studying of various public works projects such as streets, sewers, parking lots, storm drains for construction and maintenance projects. Prepares cost estimates, reports and specifications, computes grades, areas and volumes. Prepares computations, maps and other information.

Checks construction site drainage and excavation plans and reviews designs submitted for consistency with codes, ordinances, specifications, and practices of the City in the field and office. Confers with other employees and representatives of governmental agencies, public utilities and contractors to obtain information and to coordinate contract requirements. Maintains engineering files.

May function as departmental representative at various meetings. Performs related work as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited college or university with a BA or BS degree in civil engineering or a closely related field AND two (2) years of professional full-time civil engineering work, and/or capital improvement project planning and management.

Knowledge of / Skills: Civil Engineering design principles and practices and their application to municipal public works planning and construction. Principles, procedures, and laws concerning public works contracting procedures. Field Surveying inspection procedures and modern construction methods.

Contract administration, including the process of contract preparation, contractor selections, administration of contract work, change orders, dispute resolution, claims, equal employment opportunity and the closing of contracts. Design and drafting methods, equipment and technique. Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.

Knowledge of computer-aided drafting and designing, word processing, spread sheet and data base software programs. Ability to: Ability to assist in planning projects and preparing related designs, estimates and specifications; performs engineering computations and make recommendations for the solution of engineering problems. Establish and maintain effective working relationships, Communicate effectively in writing and orally, and Reason logically and creatively.

Licenses: State of California Class C Driver's license. Possession of an engineering-in-training (EIT) certificate in the State of California is highly desirable. Supplemental Information PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to drive, sit, stand, and walk on level and slippery and uneven surfaces for long periods of time.

The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; squat, twist, see, talk, and hear. The employee may climb, stoop, kneel, bend, and run. The employee must possess the strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light physical work; lift, carry, push, pull and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in busy outdoors and indoor conditions, with frequent public contact and interruptions, around traffic and may be subjected to stressful situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud and in variable weather conditions.

The employee will be required to operate a City vehicle and drive on surface streets to various locations to perform duties.
