Job description
This role serves as a strategic part of the Supply Chain Management Career Team through developing and supporting programs and opportunities for SCM students to grow into successful professionals. Situated in the Global Supply Chain Institute within the Haslam College of Business, this position reports to the Director of SCM Student Development and Career Management. The individual in this role will focus a majority of their time supporting graduate students and a portion of their time working with undergraduate SCM programs. This position serves as the primary career coach for students in all MSSCM programs. This role assists students to reach their professional potential by counseling one-on-one, providing resources, and facilitating programs that will ensure career success for students both during their program and beyond. The Assistant Director supports students through 1:1 coaching geared toward experienced professionals, facilitates professional development workshops, and interfaces with students and employers to increase access to job opportunities. Additionally, this role supports undergraduate seniors in career coaching and advances professional development through developing and maintaining career programming that is accessible to all students in the major. The individual in this role also contributes to the growth and success of the supply chain community at UT through helping foster and maintain strong employer partnerships. This role contributes strategically to college and university deliverables of key performance indicators for increased rankings by providing professional development assistance to students that improve their chances of securing roles with top companies and further contributing to our #1 ranked graduate SCM program.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Master's degree in education or human resources
Experience:
- Minimum 18 months of full time or part time experience in a career coaching or advising role - graduate teaching assistantships may count
- Experience planning and implementing programs and workshops
- Experience career coaching graduate students, non-traditional students, and adult learners
- Experience working with online students
- Experience planning and managing career fairs
- Experience working with students from supply chain management majors
- Experience working with numerous high-profile corporations and proving a high level of customer service to employers
- Experience conducting career coaching and/or career exploration meetings with business undergraduate students
- Experience planning and facilitating virtual programming and networking events
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Ability to provide strong advocacy of students in achieving their career goals; patience and resilience with an often-demanding constituency; ability to understand the often reactive and immediate nature of career advisory work
- Strong interpersonal skills; Ability to act professionally and engage students in a collaborative career coaching dialogue

- Strong customer service orientation and commitment to continual process improvement particularly in their ability to offer bespoke customer service to the department's exclusive employer partners
- Understanding of business majors, hiring practices of top companies, and familiarity with business career communications preferably specific to the field of supply chain

- Excellent communication, organization, interpersonal, and leadership skills
- Demonstrated ability to successfully collaborate with and engage faculty, administrators, employers and advise/mentor students

Graduate Student Career Coaching, Resource Development, and Program Execution
- Serve as the primary liaison to all SCM masters students seeking professional development assistance meeting with 80+ students per semester to discuss career development and assist them in their job search.
- Consult with graduate students on individualized professional development strategies based on personal career path and goals aiming for 90+% career placement 6-months from graduation.
- Conduct annual needs assessments, and create, implement, and facilitate virtual programming for MS program based on student and employer feedback
- Develop tools for tracking and reporting student outcomes for Graduate Business Programs with the goal of ensuring quality career placement in post-graduation outcomes
- Partner with graduate student staff to facilitate programming at bi-annual Immersion Week for MS SCM Online students, specifically leading all networking and professional development activities for the immersion such as negotiation, elevator pitch, career growth, etc.
- Facilitate Grad Student networking opportunities at bi-annual Supply Chain Forum and throughout the year in smaller virtual settings
- In consultation with program directors, develop and implement career curriculum and lessons to MSSCM students throughout the duration of each program.
- Design and teach a career development weekly seminar for master's students focused on building the skills, competencies, and professional readiness needed for success in the global supply chain field.
- Manage content and strategy for MS SCM LinkedIn group
- Develop targeted graduate recruiting opportunities such as panels, mock-interviews, workshops, and lunch and learns
Undergraduate Program Facilitation, Execution, and Support
- Evaluate career coaching resources and programming and develop plans for continuous improvement to ensure students are receiving quality support.
- Co-lead SCM Summer Camp which is a week-long immersive experience for high school students to learn about and engage in the field of Supply Chain Management
- Coordinate and deliver department-wide career programming from ideation to post-program assessment including develop new programming, identifying and inviting corporate partners to participate, managing event execution and communication, and creating and evaluating program assessment. Programs include resume workshops, mock interview sessions, career exploration events, etc. open to all SCM students geared toward improving chances of securing internships with top companies
- Gather and assess program data and create reports and make actionable recommendations to department leadership for updates intended to increase SCM undergraduate student engagement to 50% participation per year.
- Contribute to strategic planning, ideation, communication, logistics, problem-solving, and execution of events consistent with the Supply Chain Management Department and Global Supply Chain Institute's mission, including career fairs, forums, honors events, drop-in hours, workshops, etc.
- As needed, mentor and support student groups pertaining to the SCM major
- Supervise multiple student workers and set weekly, monthly, and annual goals aimed to support other department initiatives
Employer relations and Events
- Engage with corporate partners at events (such as fairs, forums, conferences, etc.) with the intention of cultivating long-term recruiting relationships that result in companies coming to campus multiple times a year and hiring interns and full-time students.
- Support employer partners in recruiting on campus and increasing brand awareness through developing plans for employer-focused events, making recommendations on formatting and student needs, facilitating messaging, and working with employers 1:1 to identify recruiting goals and serving as a liaison between them and students to foster student-employer connections with the goal of increasing career placement at employer partner companies.
- Develop, lead, and host employer-centric events to allow students additional recruiting opportunities
- Plan and facilitate employer networking events with GSCI partner organizations
- Plan and facilitate multiple Vol Treks (employer site visits) each semester to expose students to opportunities in the field and network with employers
