Job description

GAI Consultants has a career-building opportunity for an Assistant Engineering Manager within our Power Business Unit’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Business Sector. GAI is an established multi-disciplined engineering firm with tremendous growth opportunities in Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. This position is Hybrid, can be a fully Remote position for the right candidate. GAI’s Power Business Unit focuses on developing and supporting Energy, Institutional, Industrial, and Manufacturing clients.

As an Assistant Engineering Manager at GAI, you will have the opportunity to manage civil engineering and permitting tasks, delegate and provide direction to engineering/drafting staff, and lead and review the development of calculations, drawings, and associated project deliverables. You also will develop proposals and monitor budgets. Communication skills are essential to this position, as an Assistant Engineering Manager will need to effectively coordinate with internal and external clients as well as their Engineering Division Manager, Business Sector Leader, and other engineering discipline leads (such as mechanical, electrical, process, environmental, and geotechnical engineering). #INDHP

Job Duties:

  • Plans, designs, and facilitates civil engineering project design tasks such as site grading and drainage design; access road design; erosion and sediment pollution control design; stormwater management design; report preparation; and permitting.
  • Task management duties include being in responsible charge of technical work, staff planning, budget/schedule management, scope change management, quality assurance/peer reviews, report writing, staff mentorship, and client coordination.
  • Proposal preparation including the scope and budget development and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • In addition to proposal preparation, written communication may include the preparation of site reports, narratives, meeting minutes, and project memorandums.
  • Collaborate with other engineering leads to schedule resource and QA/QC peer reviews.
  • Independently conduct field condition assessments.
  • Performance of bid and construction phase services including responding to bidder questions, responding to contractor requests for information, and submittal reviews, site visits, and verifying change order documentation.
  • A current, valid driver’s license is required.
  • Professional Engineering License preferred. P.E. license in multiple states is a plus.
  • Travel to other offices/meet with clients/attend project-specific meetings.

  • Leads projects of moderate complexity and scope or leads a major project.
  • Analyzes complex problems across specialty areas appropriate to the practice of engineering.
  • Analyzes ethical dilemmas to determine appropriate courses of action.

Minimum Years of Experience

  • 5 – 10 years’ experience in relevant field.

Education

  • B.S. or M.S. Engineering

Certification/Licensure

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License, reciprocity in multiple states (preferred not required).

Technical Responsibilities

  • Occasionally serves as the technical advisor for the practice in the application of advanced concepts and methods in an assigned area.
  • Keeps informed of new developments and requirements affecting the practice for the purpose of recommending changes in projects or applications.
  • Occasionally develops new techniques and/or improved processes, materials, or products.
  • Values and analyzes sustainable performance of complex engineering projects from a systems perspective.

Project and Task Management

  • Occasionally plans, schedules, and coordinates the preparation of documents or activities for multiple major projects or is responsible for an entire project of a practice.
  • Analyzes project management plans for complex engineering projects.
  • Understands project delivery uncertainties and uses risk management principles to address them.
  • Reviews operational procedures to ensure compliance with applicable policies and performance measures.

Management Responsibility

  • Supervises a staff of engineers and technicians.
  • Receives administrative supervision with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits.
  • Provides continued mentored experience to senior staff.
  • Integrates professional attitudes relevant to the practice of engineering and fosters creativity, curiosity, flexibility, and dependability in staff.

Communication Skills

  • Applies principles of formal strategic and persuasive communications.
  • Represents their area of specialty within the practice and liaises with related individuals and practices.
  • Routinely interacts with practice leaders, clients, officials, contractors, and others.
