What is an assistant designer?

Although there are assistant designers in many industries, such as graphic design and marketing, in the fashion industry, an assistant designer works under the direction of a lead designer. You create and design new products or improve/modify existing products. Typically, a fashion house’s creative director develops a theme or structure to a collection. These are then interpreted by the art director and designers who create the actual look of each piece for a collection. Your duties are to sketch and design individual pieces, create color boards, and prepare tech sheets, which have the design specifications for the manufacturer to follow during production.

How does an assistant designer typically collaborate with senior designers and other departments during a project?

As an Assistant Designer, you will work closely with senior designers by supporting them in tasks such as creating mood boards, preparing technical drawings, and sourcing materials. Collaboration often extends to working with production teams, merchandisers, and sometimes suppliers to ensure design concepts are accurately developed and executed. Regular team meetings and feedback sessions are common, providing opportunities to learn from experienced professionals and contribute ideas. Effective communication and organization are key to thriving in this collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite or similar software, and often a relevant degree or diploma in design. Familiarity with design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and experience with project management platforms is typically expected. Strong attention to detail, creativity, effective communication, and the ability to take feedback set successful candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for supporting senior designers, delivering high-quality work, and ensuring smooth project workflows.

What is the difference between Assistant Designer vs Junior Designer?

Both roles are common in creative industries like fashion, graphic, and interior design, but the Assistant Designer often involves more support responsibilities and collaboration with senior staff.

How much do assistant designers make?

Assistant designers typically earn between $40,000 and $60,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. In larger markets or specialized fields, salaries can be higher, and additional skills such as proficiency in design software may influence compensation.

What does an assistant designer do?

An assistant designer supports lead designers by helping develop concepts, creating sketches, preparing design presentations, and managing project details. They often use design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and collaborate with teams to ensure project deadlines are met. This role typically requires strong organizational skills and a basic understanding of design principles.

Job description

Department: Vertical Transportation

Location: Highlands Ranch, CO (Onsite)

This position is based full-time in our Highlands Ranch, Colorado office. Applicants must currently reside within a reasonable commuting distance of Highlands Ranch or be willing and able to relocate immediately upon accepting an offer. Remote work arrangements are not available for this position.

Create the Designs That Keep Buildings Moving

Are you interested in sophisticated machinery and want to bring your skills to a great company? Lerch Bates is seeking a skilled designer to develop layout solutions, produce drawings, and be a point of contact and source of information for our clients. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in architecture or engineering, mechanical design experience, and previous experience with Revit. Lerch Bates does things differently. If you’re looking for a job that offers work-life balance, great benefits, and career development, we want to hear from you.

Become an Employee-Owner

One of the biggest advantages of working at Lerch Bates is that we are 100% employee-owned through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).

Unlike many companies that offer only a salary and retirement plan, eligible employees receive company-funded ESOP shares at no cost to them as part of their long-term retirement benefits.

As Lerch Bates grows, employee-owners share in the company's success. For many employees, the ESOP becomes one of the most valuable financial benefits of their career by helping build meaningful long-term wealth in addition to their salary and traditional 401(k).

When you join Lerch Bates, you are not just building better buildings. You also have the opportunity to build your financial future alongside the company's success.

About Lerch Bates:

Lerch Bates (LB) is a global technical consulting firm focused on improving how buildings perform for owners, designers, and the people who use them every day. For more than 75 years we’ve partnered on some of the world’s most complex and high-profile projects. Today we provide Total Building Performance expertise that integrates Building Science and Building Flow into a unified delivery model.

Our work spans design, construction, investigation, repair, rehabilitation, management, and modernization with one consistent goal: helping clients make confident, well-informed decisions in an increasingly complex built environment.

We are 100% employee-owned through our ESOP. That means when the company succeeds, our employee-owners share in that success. It's more than a retirement benefit—it's an ownership mindset backed by the opportunity to build long-term financial value while helping shape the future of the company.

What You’ll Do:

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed in this position. They are not intended to prescribe or restrict the assignments that management may make.

  • Design layouts for all types of vertical transportation equipment, including passenger and freight hydraulic and traction elevators, escalators, and moving walks.

  • Interpret specifications when provided and apply them as required by the job task.
  • Research elevator codes and building codes and apply them as required by the job task.
  • Download and review Architectural drawings. Update Consultant on design changes/issues from architectural drawings compared to LB Vertical Transportation drawings.
  • Document Consultant and Architect from phone conversations, emails, drawings/mark-ups, and faxes.
  • Effectively communicate with BIM/CAD project coordinators.

What You’ll Bring:

  • A bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience using AutoCAD and Revit. Experience with architectural drafting and coordination with architects is preferred.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities.

  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Excel, Acrobat, PowerPoint, and Bluebeam Revu.
  • Competency with Revit. Some education/experience in AutoCAD is helpful.
  • Mechanical engineering design experience and electrical engineering design experience are preferred.

Why Work with Lerch Bates?

  • Competitive base salary of $00 - $00 per year, based on experience, qualifications, and location
  • Annual performance-based bonus opportunity, with target incentive levels varying by position and based on individual and company performance.
