What is an assistant designer?

Although there are assistant designers in many industries, such as graphic design and marketing, in the fashion industry, an assistant designer works under the direction of a lead designer. You create and design new products or improve/modify existing products. Typically, a fashion house’s creative director develops a theme or structure to a collection. These are then interpreted by the art director and designers who create the actual look of each piece for a collection. Your duties are to sketch and design individual pieces, create color boards, and prepare tech sheets, which have the design specifications for the manufacturer to follow during production.

What does an assistant designer do?

An assistant designer supports lead designers by helping develop concepts, creating sketches, preparing design presentations, and managing project details. They often use design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and collaborate with teams to ensure project deadlines are met. Colby Co. is a midsize, multidisciplinary design firm specializing in architecture and mechanical, structural, electrical, fire protection, and civil engineering. With approximately 70 employees, Colby Co. is known for its commitment to technical and service excellence within a fun, flexible, and rigorous work environment. The majority of our work supports federal and other government clients, providing opportunities to contribute to complex, technically challenging projects.

Located in the vibrant small city of Portland, Maine, Colby Co. offers an exceptional balance of opportunities for working and living well. Colby Co. has been named one of the "Best Places to Work in Maine" for seven consecutive years and recognized as an "Emerging Professional Friendly Firm" by AIA New England for the past three years.

We currently have an opening for an Architectural Designer with three to five years of experience working in a design firm setting. Responsibilities include assisting with studies and planning, developing architectural designs, preparing and coordinating drawings and construction documents, collaborating with multiple engineering disciplines, and supporting projects during construction administration.

The Architectural Designer will contribute throughout all phases of project development, from initial planning and design through construction. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical and organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with architects, engineers, project managers, consultants, and clients. Candidates should also be comfortable managing multiple assignments, communicating potential concerns, and working with the project team to meet deadlines.

This position is part of a 12-person Architectural Department composed of Registered Architects and Architectural Designers. Because Colby Co. also provides mechanical, fire protection, electrical, structural, and civil engineering services through its in-house staff, the position offers significant opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration and professional growth.

Responsibilities
  • Research, assess, plan, and assist in the design of a variety of building projects
  • Prepare architectural drawings, models, presentations, and construction documents from schematic design through construction administration
  • Coordinate architectural work with in-house civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection engineering teams
  • Collaborate with project architects, project managers, consultants, and clients to support project goals, schedules, and deliverables
  • Conduct and document site visits and existing-conditions assessments
  • Assist with construction administration, including reviewing submittals, substitution requests, and requests for information
  • Apply applicable building codes, accessibility standards, and construction requirements throughout the design process
  • Manage multiple assignments while communicating questions, conflicts, and schedule concerns to the project team
Desired Qualifications and Traits
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture or Architectural Engineering
  • Three to five years of professional experience in an architectural or multidisciplinary design firm
  • Working knowledge of building codes, accessibility standards, building construction, materials, and structural systems
  • Proficiency in Revit; experience with AutoCAD and other architectural design or visualization software is also valued
  • Experience preparing and coordinating construction documents
  • Strong design, technical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage priorities and meet project deadlines
  • Interest in continued professional development and progress toward architectural licensure
  • Architectural registration is not required
Compensation
  • Base Salary Range: $75,000-$105,000 annually
  • The final salary will be based on the candidate's experience, qualifications, licensure, and overall fit for the position.
  • This role is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus and Colby Co.'s comprehensive benefits package.
Benefits
  • No-cost employee-only health insurance paired with a company-funded HSA, with affordable family coverage also available
