What does an assistant design engineer do?

An Assistant Design Engineer supports senior engineers in creating and developing designs for products, structures, or systems. Their tasks often include preparing technical drawings, conducting research, creating prototypes, and assisting with testing and analysis. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create models and work closely with other team members to ensure designs meet project requirements and safety standards. This role is typically an entry-level position that provides valuable experience in engineering design and project management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Design Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, CAD software proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or CATIA and knowledge of industry standards or certifications such as EIT (Engineer-in-Training) are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong teamwork and communication skills make candidates stand out in this role. These competencies are essential to ensure precise, innovative design solutions and effective collaboration within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

What is the difference between Assistant Design Engineer vs Design Engineer?

AspectAssistant Design EngineerDesign Engineer
QualificationsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; some certificationsBachelor's or higher in engineering; often more experience
Work EnvironmentSupport role in design teams, assisting senior engineersLead or primary role in designing projects, overseeing technical details
ResponsibilitiesAssist in creating designs, preparing drawings, and conducting researchDevelop and finalize designs, review technical specifications, and coordinate with manufacturing

The main difference between an Assistant Design Engineer and a Design Engineer lies in responsibility level and experience. Assistant Design Engineers support the design process and gain experience, while Design Engineers take on more complex tasks and lead design projects. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but Design Engineers typically have more hands-on experience and responsibility.

What are some common challenges assistant design engineers face when transitioning from academic projects to professional engineering environments?

Assistant Design Engineers often find that transitioning from academic projects to real-world engineering roles involves adapting to tighter deadlines, larger teams, and stricter compliance with industry standards. Unlike classroom assignments, professional projects require precise documentation, coordination with other departments such as manufacturing and quality assurance, and adherence to budget constraints. Embracing collaborative tools and clear communication is essential, as is being open to feedback from senior engineers to grow technically and professionally.

Description
Gonzalez Companies is a partner-managed firm that provides comprehensive planning, design, and construction management services to large and small water, sewer, and utility districts, departments of transportation, and municipalities. We are seeking a Design Engineer to join our team and help serve our clients and communities. If you're eager to learn, ready to make an impact, and passionate about delivering exceptional service, we'd love to hear from you.
This opportunity is ideal for an early-career Design Engineer with 0-4 years of experience who is looking to continue developing their technical expertise while taking on increasing responsibility within project teams. You'll work alongside experienced professionals, contribute to meaningful projects, and gain hands-on experience in design, project delivery, and client service. Preferred backgrounds include Water/Wastewater, Site/Civil, or MEP engineering.
Grow Your Career with Blueprint
This role includes a seat in Blueprint, our new early-career leadership program designed for engineers looking to accelerate their professional growth. Over six months, participants take part in a hands-on curriculum focused on professional development, business acumen, and project delivery through case studies, simulations, and interactive exercises.
The program explores topics such as project economics, client communication, and leadership fundamentals, while providing opportunities to build relationships across the industry. Blueprint concludes with an in-person capstone event where participants present their work, reflect on key learnings, and set goals for the year ahead.
Your Future Starts With a Plan.
Your Primary Responsibilities will include
  • Develop engineering designs, plans, and specifications for infrastructure, site development, water/wastewater, and/or building systems projects.
  • Perform technical analyses, calculations, and modeling to support design decisions across disciplines (e.g., hydraulic modeling, grading/drainage, or mechanical/electrical system sizing).
  • Prepare construction drawings and documents using CAD/BIM software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit).
  • Coordinate design efforts with multidisciplinary teams, including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineers.
  • Review project requirements, codes, and regulations to ensure designs are compliant with local, state, and federal standards.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, permitting documents, and engineering studies.
  • Support project managers with scope development, scheduling, budgeting, and progress tracking.
  • Conduct site visits, field investigations, and data collection to inform design and verify existing conditions.
  • Collaborate with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to address design questions and resolve issues.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and RFIs during construction for conformance with design intent.
  • Identify and implement cost-effective, sustainable, and innovative engineering solutions.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and adhere to quality control procedures.

What you'll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental engineering discipline.
  • 1+ years of relevant engineering design experience (level can be adjusted based on role seniority).
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred
  • Experience with design and analysis tools relevant to discipline (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, hydraulic modeling software, or MEP design tools).
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., local/state agencies, EPA, building codes, NEC, etc.).
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with construction documents, specifications, and permitting processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with project management tools is a plus.
  • Ability to perform field work, including site visits and inspections, as needed.

Gonzalez Offers Competitive Benefits including:

  • Major medical, dental and vision insurance
  • Flexible Spending Account
  • Health Savings Account
  • 401K
  • Bonus program
  • Paid holidays and generous paid time off
