The Team

 

Scotiabank's Global Technology and Enterprise Platform (GTEP) Database operations (MSSQL) team takes care of end-to-end support for Microsoft data platform products across the globe where Scotiabank is present. Physical & logical database services, from deployment, project support and after go-live steady state support is the essence of what we do.

Reporting to the DBA Manager, the Database Administrator would be supporting the MS SQL Server on-premises as well as on public cloud. As a member of the database administration group, you will assist in the team effort to maximize the availability, security, and performance of the databases.

The Database Administrator is required to work hybrid (on site and work from home) as well as to be on-call for rotational after-hours support of the bank's databases.  The Database Administrator must be prepared to provide remote dial-in support, in response to routine monitoring alerts and scheduled & unscheduled maintenance tasks occurring after hours and on weekends.

 Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

 

  • Configuration planning & deploying MSSQL servers/components on public cloud and on-premises servers.
  • Performance tunning, capacity planning and monitoring.
  • Database maintenance/housekeeping including database rebuilds/re-indexing/expansion and archiving.
  • Trouble-shoot MSSQL server problems and assist in the resolution of application problems.
  • MSSQL Server Software currency resolution including Patching/Upgrades/Migrations.
  • Assist in database code promotions & data fixes following internal change control process.
  • Disaster Recovery/High Availability (DR/HA) support with backup, recovery and failover/failback of local and remote replicated databases.
  • Provide DBA support to development/implementation projects as assigned, doing installations, database loading, migrations, testing, and go live support etc.
  • Follow Database best practices, security standards and vulnerability remediations of MSSQL servers and components.
  • Involve in Database related incident management, alerts, and business as usual tasks.

Must have skills 

  • At least 5+ years of progressive technical working experience as a MSSQL Database Administrator.
  • MSSQL Server 2022/2019/2017/2016 and prior versions DB Administration
  • Windows Servers 2022/2019/2016 and prior versions.
  • GCP Cloud SQL(MSSQL), GCVE, GCE and Azure MI/DBaaS/IaaS database administration.
  • AD, Firewall IP/Port, domain trust/authentication methods related to MSSQL/Windows database connectivity.

You possess sound practical working experience with:

  • MSSQL Instance/Database Installation/Configuration/Hardening
  • Assist developers on Stored Procedures performance optimization and troubleshooting.
  • Application side tuning vs. server-side tuning.
  • Setup HA/DR with MSSQL Always-On, Availability groups & Database Replication
  • Data Encryption & Masking Data at rest as well as in transit e.g.  TDE, SQL Always encryption and TLS etc. configuration
  • Database Re-build/De-fragment techniques
  • Logical & Physical Backup/Recovery/Compression techniques
  • MSSQL Services (SSRS/SSAS/SSIS/Poly base, R Service, Power BI etc.)
  • Scripting and Automation with TSQL, SSIS, Power Shell, C#, VB Scripts etc.
  • You have good analytical, problem solving, trouble shooting and automation skills.

Education and certificationss:

  • Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Math, or related discipline.
  • Microsoft Data Platform and Azure/Google Cloud certification is desired for this role.
