Summary:
Performs various routine functions precisely and accurately to assist the laboratory professional staff and to facilitate testing by receiving and processing specimens, performing clerical tasks and specimen collection as needed; work with and maintain the automation pre-analytical line.
Responsibilities:
• Performs tasks as outlined in policies and work instructions related to specimen collection and /or specimen processing.
• Demonstrates adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory. • Responsible for registering patients in the appropriate computer system, as needed.
• Participates in quality improvement activities.
• Demonstrates ability to utilize all applicable computer systems.
• Maintains an operational knowledge of equipment in the section which may include centrifuges, tube systems, and automated processors.
• May process or place samples on laboratory instruments in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• With proper documentation of competency and training, may perform non complex tasks such as instrument preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, assist in quality control procedures, primary culture inoculations, stain slide preparations, ordering supplies, etc. consistent with the needs of the specific area of work.
• Assists with the training and evaluation of students, new employees, and employee cross training as assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications:
Lab Assistant I - HS or GED required, phlebotomy or transcription experience preferred.
Lab Assistant II - HS or GED required and a certified phlebotomist, or AS in health related sciences or Chemistry, Microbiology, Biology or Medical Technology.
Lab Assistant III - BS in health related sciences or Chemistry, Microbiology, or Biology. Experience performing laboratory processing preferred.
