POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Classics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Ancient Greek Literature. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.
This position is being advertised concurrently with the Assistant Professor - Ancient Greek Literature position (Req 48736); however, only one appointment will be made. To be considered for this role and/or Assistant Professor - Ancient Greek Literature (Req 48736) you must submit a separate application for each posting.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Classics or a related area, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Candidates must outline a program of rigorous and innovative research at the highest international level backed by a track record commensurate with their career stage, and present clear evidence of a capacity to teach both graduate and undergraduate students at all levels. For undergraduate teaching, this will include translation-based courses in ancient Greek literature, and language courses in ancient Greek. Candidates should also have expertise in at least one other ancient language. It is important that applicants address in their cover letter how they would complement and add value to existing Departmental strengths, and that they demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills in their application materials, as well as a commitment to improving equity, diversity and inclusion within the subject.
Evidence of excellence in research may be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, conference presentations, grants and awards commensurate with career stage, by a research statement showing ambition and innovation, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong recommendations by referees of high standing.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, and a teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below).
RESPONSIBILITIES
Candidates will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
In addition, the successful candidate will be assigned a teaching and service load.Â
HIRING SALARY RANGE
The rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The salary range of this position exceeds $200,000 CAD per annum.
