Job description

Description
The Department of Computer Science and the Massive Data Institute seek a postdoctoral fellow with research interests at the intersection of Statistics, Computer Security and Human Computer Interaction to work on empirical research projects related to privacy, safety, and AI. Applicants can hold a Ph.D in computer science or a relevant field, and will conduct research in multiple directions. The first direction is research into participatory differential privacy using game theory and conjoint analysis methods. The second direction is the use of advanced demographic methods (network scaleup surveys, list experiments, etc.) to measure the prevalence of security and privacy threats like perpetration of technology facilitated abuse including AI-involved abuse and the use of survey methodology & statistics training to develop AI evaluations that bridge psychological and computational science to assess AI system propensity to generate synthetic non-consensual intimate imagery
This position will encompass duties in research and service.
Research:
We're seeking a postdoc who is excited about applying statistical survey methods to research focused on privacy & consumer protection. Your first project will aim to develop a game-theoretic approach to stakeholder participation in the deployment of public interest technologies involving differential privacy as part of an NSF grant funded project. Postdocs are expected to manage multiple projects, additional projects will focus on areas of mutual interest between the postdoc and PIs including e.g. measuring the prevalence of security and privacy threats, developing AI evaluations that bridge psychological and computational science to assess AI system propensity to generate synthetic non-consensual intimate imagery, etc. Exemplar tasks will include:
  • Designing empirical research studies that use complex and new survey research methods. This includes reasoning about appropriate data to collect to answer your research questions, pre-registering analyses, developing an analysis plan for your data, etc.
  • Developing prototype front-end systems necessary for advanced survey data collection.
  • Project management: managing data collection and in some cases human annotation of measured data
  • Composing data narratives using traditional statistics (hypothesis tests, regression models) applied to analyze survey data
  • Writing academic papers for publication in CS measurement (e.g., IMC, WWW), security (e.g., USENIX Security) and/or HCI (e.g., CHI, CSCW) venues
  • Mentoring junior team members on statistical analysis, experimental design, and paper writing

Service:
Fellows are additionally expected to engage in service as a reviewer or sub-reviewer for academic publications as appropriate for their field.
What We Offer You
You will receive hands-on research mentorship from Dr. Elissa Redmiles. Additionally, Dr. Redmiles offers up to $1000 in funds for data collection costs and, if desired, periodic mentorship (with no co-authorship expectation) toward an independent project of your choosing.
Fellowships are temporary advanced scholarly appointments for one academic year and summer (September 1, 2026 - August 31, 2027), with the possibility of renewal. Fellows will receive a competitve annualized salary, health insurance coverage and a dedicated working space.
Application Instructions:
Click on Apply Now to submit the following required materials:
1. Cover Letter or brief statement of research interests connecting to this position
2. Curriculum Vitae
3. One example publication or other writing sample
4. One Reference Letter (to be submitted by the reference writer at this site)
Applications are due by June 15.
For questions related to this position, please contact: Elissa Redmiles, Clare Luce Booth Assistant Professor of Computer Science, elissa.redmiles@georgetown.edu
The projected base salary range is $75,000 - $80,000. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
