Job description

Department Overview

The OHSU Casey Eye Institute (Casey) Community Outreach Program supports Casey's mission to end preventable blindness in Oregon. As a donor funded program with a mission to serve communities who experience barriers to basic vision care across Oregon, this position provides critical operations, driving and fleet maintenance duties to ensure the safe operation(s) of the program's adult and pediatric Mobile Health Units (MHUs), in coordination with program staff. This is a full-time, benefited position. 

Function/Duties of Position

Mobile Health Unit (MHU) Driving Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the safe operation of the CEI MHUs throughout Oregon.
  • Conduct routine pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections (e.g., fluids, tires, lights, brakes, and safety equipment) to ensure safe operation of the mobile health unit.
  • Ability to set-up, operate load and unload RV equipment (leveling jacks, generator, HVAC, shore power, etc.)
  • Follows all Federal, State, and Local laws in regard to motor vehicle operation and safety.
  • Ensure equipment is securely stored to reduce damage to equipment and vehicle.
  • Adheres to all departmental, parking, and safety policies and procedures in the operation of motor vehicles.
  • Commonly transported materials including: people, office and medical supplies/equipment, event materials, and other items.
  • Responsible for maintaining timeliness of route and adjusting as needed to traffic or weather conditions.
  • Responsible for maintaining integrity of materials throughout the transportation chain.
  • Properly operates OHSU owned and leased vehicles, in accordance with all Federal, State, and local laws, as well as departmental policy and procedure.
  • Completes daily vehicle inspections and documents as necessary.
  • Reports and discrepancies to appropriate coordinator or management team member.
  • Responsible for assisting in maintaining cleanliness of the interior and exterior of vehicles operated.
  • May be asked to install snow chains during inclement weather events.
  • Provide general trouble shooting assistance for the vehicle/lift.
  • Ensuring electrical panel and batteries are correctly powered up and down at the start/end of events.
  • Manage fueling and fuel card.

Pediatric and Adult Mobile Clinic Support

  • Assist in vehicle and screening equipment set up on-site.
  • Set up and breakdown interior equipment, including ophthalmic exam equipment.
  • Assists in setting up and/or staffing screening stations (check-in, autorefractor & lensometer, DA, NA, refraction, tech, frames, checkout stations, etc.)
  • Serve as professional representative of OHSU and the outreach program
  • Providing support to volunteers and participants regarding clinic/program operations, supplies/equipment locations and helping to ensure they have a positive and rewarding experience.
  • Assist participants with safely entering and exiting the mobile health uni.
  • Assist with cleaning interior of MHUs pre/post event.

Mobile Health Units (MHU) Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with mechanics, vendors and other vehicle and medical equipment services as needed for repairs and upkeep of all the program's MHUs.
  • Maintain accurate logs of vehicle usage, maintenance, repairs, and mileage.
  • Monitor and maintain vehicle systems, including fuel levels, oil, coolant, and tire pressure, and report any issues promptly.
  • Ensure the vehicle is stocked with emergency supplies (e.g., roadside kit, first aid kit) and that they are functional and up to date.
  • Support minor troubleshooting and basic maintenance tasks as appropriate (e.g., replacing bulbs, checking fuses).
  • Ensure all required vehicle documentation (registration, insurance, inspection records) is current and readily accessible.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the vehicle interior and exterior, including clinical and storage areas.
  • Identify and report mechanical issues or safety concerns to appropriate personnel and facilitate timely repairs.
  • Assist in ensuring medical equipment is kept in good repair, and clinic supplies are stocked in MHUs.

Other duties as assigned by program staff, or physician on site.

Required Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • High School or GED equivalent
  • 2 years of professional driving experience using vehicles such as sedans, vans, and box trucks. AND
  • 1 year of industry related experience 
  • Current Driver's license and driving record that meets OHSU's driving requirements.
  • Basic computers skills, including familiarity with MS Office 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team with great accuracy and efficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and complete projects independently.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals including volunteers, medical professionals, students, underserved populations, patients, and community partners. 
  • Ability to operate and communicate effectively and professionally.
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks with interruptions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication. 
  • Basic computer skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience driving large vehicles and/or RVs.
  • Experience in community outreach, working with schools and/or health care agencies
  • Experience working with volunteers, and/or community service/engagement.
  • Bilingual (Spanish & English)
  • Commercial Driver's License
Additional Details

Typical work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, with travel required throughout Oregon. Position includes frequent weekend and overnight travel (up to 75%). Shifts may range from 8 to 12 hours, particularly during community-based outreach events.
