COMING AUGUST 2026
The Kitchen Assistant

You will be a core member of our opening team and ambassador introducing RYE to NYC and ultimately the United States as of August 2026. We are looking for someone who shares our passion for the craft of breadmaking as well as high-quality ingredients and who can see themselves growing with us in a highly competitive field.

General Areas of Responsibility

The Kitchen Assistants form our back of house team and ensure that operations run smoothly. RYE by MARTIN AUER will sell entire loaves of RYE as well as individual slices with a variety of spreads. Back-of-House Staff slice RYE loaves, prepare ON RYE slices, refill spreads, wash dishesand make sure that the storage areas remains tidy. Hygiene, cleanliness, and compliance with all food law standards have top priority. They also keep an eye out for their colleagues Front of House (Client Hosts) and ensure counters in the sales area are continuously restocked.

Tasks in detail

  • Quality Assurance & Preparation of RYE and ON RYE
  • Knowledge and consistent implementation of RYE's quality standards in daily operations.
  • Ongoing monitoring of product and ingredient quality, including that of the spreads and potential toppings.
  • Operate the bread cutting machine to pre-slice RYE loaves to be used for the preparation of the ON RYE selection.
  • Spread and arrange different ON RYE slices on serving boards.
  • Operate the bread cutting machine to pre-cut loaves into quarters and halves.
  • Refill the spread selection into to-go cups with correct labeling and storage according to allergen and cooling specifications.
  • Carefully handle cutting tools and industrial kitchen tools and comply with safety specifications.
  • Restocking
    • Monitoring demand with the help of a live camera connection to the sales floor.
    • Restocking the ON RYE selection by completely removing empty serving boards and replacing them with refilled boards in compliance with hygiene guidelines.
  • Warehousing & Order
    • Responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and order in the warehouse area.
    • Monitor minimum stock levels while ensuring cold-chain compliance and adherence to the FIFO principle.
    • Assist with the receipt and proper storage of deliveries.
  • Hygiene & Allergens
    • Knowledge and implementation of the valid hygiene requirements (NYC DOH).
    • Shared responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in the entire back-of-house area.
    • Careful handling of allergenic foods, with strict adherence to all labeling and separation requirements.
    • Perform dishwashing duties and ensure all work areas remain clean and orderly.

Requirements

  • Physical Requirements
    • Ability to remain standing for the majority of the workday.
    • Ability to work with their hands to execute quick and repetitive motions.
    • Ability to use their senses to control and test ingredients and spreads.
    • Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
    • Ability to reach overhead and handle heavier items.
  • Availability Requirements
    • Availability to work during opening hours from 8am to 7pm - earliest shifts starting at 7:00am and latest ending at 7:30pm.
    • Flexibility to work on weekends and holidays.
    • Based in NYC and legally authorized to work in the United States. We do not sponsor employment visas for this role.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Has prior experience of working in a commercial kitchen and can operate industrial kitchen tools.
  • Has a Food Protection Certificate (not required).
  • Is open to receive training for the preparation of ON RYE and learn about RYE’s production process.
  • Can remain standing for multiple hours on end, is able to lift as well as push a load of 50lbs and reach overhead to handle heavier items.
  • Has good organizational skills with the ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
  • Pays strong attention to detail and cleanliness.
  • Is legally authorized to work in the United States. We do not sponsor employment visas for this role.
