SUMMARY:
Provides overall on-site leadership and management on a construction project site. The Superintendent is considered the Company's representative and main point of contact on the construction site. The Superintendent handles the flow of communication between Clients' on- site representatives, on-site inspectors, union representatives, subcontractors, craft workers, and company personnel. The Superintendent plans, coordinates, and supervises onsite functions including scheduling, engineering, material control, and day-to-day direction of field personnel.
EXPECTED RESULTS:
  • Safety planning is included in all pre-job planning and considered foremost in the daily operations. Provide a safe working environment with NO lost time accidents. Cost of claims continuously below the company's goal
  • Thoroughly planning the work. Ensure that the Production System Management techniques and tools are being utilized throughout the crews
  • Mentoring, training, and coaching foremen, engineers and others as assigned
  • Creating and maintaining the project schedule with a constant goal of beating scheduled milestone dates
  • Solving problems and resolving conflicts in a timely manner
  • Fostering good relationships with Client and Client's representatives
  • Effectively managing vendors and subcontractors
  • Ensuring quality of workmanship meets company standards

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervise craft employees and/or other contractors as required by the contract
  • Provide a safe environment for all workers on the jobsite. Safety responsibilities include, but are not limited to, preplan jobsite safety with Safety Manager, ensure monthly crane inspections are completed; ensure safety is part of all Operation Plans; ensure personnel are safety trained prior to starting an operation; hold foremen accountable for daily crew meetings; ensure existing utilities are located prior to construction activities; conduct safety inspections; issue written warning as needed; respond to accident/near hit per policy; and comply with drug testing requirements
  • Provide technical assistance, such as interpretation of drawings, recommending construction methods and equipment, etc., as required
  • Assist project management in developing and implementing project procedures, working documents, standards, etc.
  • Ensure all onsite personnel comply with project procedures, OSHA, safety program, requirements, work rules, etc. Document all violations, notify project management, recommend and implement corrective actions as required
  • Assume responsibility for productivity of crafts, efficient use of materials & equipment, and contractual performance of the project
  • Handle and/or assist with contract administration duties, which includes but is not limited to, having a thorough understanding of the Owner's contract terms; preparing RFI's; initiating and monitoring Extra Work Orders; collecting and preparing documentation for proposed change orders with Owner and subcontractors/vendors; communicating with Resident Engineer daily, and attending owner coordination meetings
  • Continually improve proper working techniques through training, processes & procedures, and company policies
  • Exhibit a thorough understanding of subcontractor and purchase order terms
  • Coordinate and schedule all subcontractors. Schedule weekly meetings with all subcontractors' foremen is encouraged
  • Ensure jobsite layout of structures is accurate. Establish initial controls and offsets (can be hired out to surveyor), double check foreman layout daily, check subgrade elevations daily, and check UG pipe fall, pipe laser setup, etc. daily
  • Maintain accurate time keeping and cost records (could be used as a basis in estimating)
  • Be sure that material received is properly inspected for quantity and quality, and that the receiving tickets are properly signed and coded and forwarded to Project Coordinator
  • Manage heavy equipment. Review equipment requirements with the Project Manager. Emphasis should be given to utilization of company-owned equipment. Coordinate mobilization and demobilizations with shop personnel
  • Create job environment of trust, partnering, teamwork, and fun
  • Celebrate successes routinely
  • Train your replacement. Look for opportunities to share knowledge and on-the-job experiences with foremen and engineers
  • Utilizes company standards for jobsite paperwork, and maintains files
  • Ensure timely job closeout and punch list completion. Assist in developing plan for startup activities

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Must have experience working in a self-perform environment
  • 4-year construction management degree or equivalent; and/or combinations of technical training and/or related experience; and/or minimum of 8 years construction management; and/or craft supervision experience in similar facility construction
  • Experience must be within heavy industrial (water/waste water, power, wind, or refinery)
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of construction (technology, equipment, methods); craft agreements, jurisdiction, negotiations, engineering, cost control schedule and safety required
  • Have a thorough understanding of job cost reports
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and supervisor skills essential
  • Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
