Job description

Job Description
BU Transportation Services and "The BUCK":
Boston University Transportation Services provides mobility options to the Boston University community including a private shuttle system, MBTA pass services, motor vehicle parking, and active transportation amenities. As part of Transportation Services' Transportation Demand Management portfolio, the BU Cycle Kitchen (BUCK) encourages bicycling as an alternative to driving. The BUCK's storefront space at 1019 Commonwealth Avenue is open Tuesday-Saturday for drop-in mechanical assistance/instruction, classes, community building events, and rides.
Bicycle Program Assistant Manager:
The Bicycle Program Assistant Manager is a teaching position based in the Boston University Cycle Kitchen (BUCK). They are responsible for teaching safe bicycling and bike repair through hands-on one-on-one mechanical instruction, group rides, classroom-based clinics, and development of print and web-based educational materials. The position requires teaching abilities, mechanical aptitude, event planning, and communication experience.
Responsibilities:
Bicycle maintenance and repair instruction (60%)
  • The Bicycle Program Assistant Manager must evaluate bicycles and scooters for safety issues, then teach their owners how address those issues.
  • Unlike assembly work, repair work entails constant decision-making based on advance knowledge of 100 years of bicycle technology. As such, this position requires an experienced bike mechanic with excellent judgement and teaching abilities.
  • A poorly executed repair on an employee or student's mode of transportation can have very serious safety implications.
  • The Bicycle Program Assistant will also help to train, manage, and direct student employees in these and other Cycle Kitchen tasks.

Safe biking education and encouragement (20%)
  • The Bicycle Program Assistant Manager is responsible for developing and delivering events, programs, and resources that promote bicycling and educate about safe bicycling.
  • These include but are not limited to classroom-based clinics, fun pop-up events, bike rides, and events developed in collaboration with other offices and departments.
  • Organizing and running events, particularly bike rides in city traffic, requires discretion and judgement.

Communication (10%)
  • The Bicycle Program Assistant Manager will promote events and programs through creative and original print, web, social-media, and in-person communication campaigns.
  • This requires some marketing, writing, and graphic design experience.

Operations (10%)
  • The Bicycle Program Assistant Manager manages and trains student staff at the BUCK, maintains inventory of helmets, lights, bells, and bike parts, provisions access to secure bike rooms, registers bicycles, removes abandoned bicycles, and helps to manage university bike facilities (parking, repair stations, pumps, lockers, etc.).

Required Skills
  • Enthusiasm for bicycling as a means of transport.
  • 1-3 years' work experience in related field (bike mechanic, educator, event organizer, etc.)
  • Bicycle repair skills - professional mechanic experience preferred but not required.
  • Instructional experience - must be able to patiently relay mechanical concepts and proper tool handling to individuals without mechanical experience.
  • Communication Skills - the ideal candidate will be able to relay ideas verbally but also through print and web media.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred.

Compensation
The salary range for this position is $47,000 - $53,000 annually. This range is based on factors such as experience, qualifications, and the overall scope of the role. The final salary offered may vary depending on these factors. Boston University offers a comprehensive benefits package including tuition remission for employees and dependents, robust health/dental insurance, and retirement plans (TIAA/Fidelity). Employees also enjoy generous paid time off, including vacation, sick time, holidays, and a year-end intersession, alongside wellness resources.
