Assistant Autonomous Vehicle information

What is an assistant autonomous vehicle?

An Assistant Autonomous Vehicle is a vehicle equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) that enable it to perform certain driving tasks with minimal or no human intervention. These vehicles use sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence to navigate, detect obstacles, and make driving decisions. Assistant Autonomous Vehicles are designed to enhance safety, improve traffic efficiency, and reduce human error on the road. They often operate at lower levels of autonomy, where a human driver is still required to supervise or take over in complex situations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant autonomous vehicle operator?

To thrive as an Assistant Autonomous Vehicle Operator, you need a solid understanding of vehicle operation, safety protocols, and basic computer literacy, often supported by a valid driver's license and a clean driving record. Familiarity with autonomous vehicle technology, onboard diagnostic systems, and data logging tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help operators respond to dynamic situations and coordinate with technical teams. These skills ensure the safe and efficient testing and operation of autonomous vehicles in real-world environments.

What are some common challenges faced by assistant autonomous vehicle operators during day-to-day operations?

Assistant Autonomous Vehicle operators often encounter challenges such as monitoring the vehicle’s performance in real-time, responding quickly to unexpected obstacles or changes in the driving environment, and ensuring clear communication with the engineering team. Staying alert during long shifts and accurately documenting incidents or technical issues are essential parts of the role. Additionally, operators must adapt to frequent software updates and procedural changes, requiring ongoing learning and adaptability.

Job description

Isuzu Technical Center of America is seeking an Autonomous Driving Intern to join its operations in Plymouth, MI, for Summer 2026. The selected candidate will be placed with a preferred agency for employment.

JOB SUMMARY

Isuzu Technical Center of America (ITCA) is seeking a highly motivated Autonomous Driving Intern to support ITCA advanced engineering team in the development and integration of Level 4 autonomous driving technologies. In this role, the intern will work closely with Isuzu internal teams and Silicon Valley-based partner companies on white-box development projects, gaining hands-on experience in the validation and deployment of autonomous systems. The intern will assist in tasks such as requirement analysis, system integration, software testing, and performance evaluation. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of vehicle engineering and cutting-edge autonomous technology within a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor and analyze autonomous vehicle virtual and on-road testing results submitted by external partners, identify root causes of disengagements, and contribute to bug tracking and resolution.
  • Review pull request submitted by external partner teams and perform code-level assessment to verify performance impacts of proposed software changes. Support requirement traceability by mapping software changes to functional and system-level requirements.
  • Track and document the daily technical progress, including code updates, open issues, blockers, and development milestones with JIRA dashboards and Confluence pages.
  • Assist with system integration and validation of autonomous driving (perception, planning, and control) features on OEM vehicle platforms. Participate in software integration testing, both in simulation and on physical test vehicles.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports to: Manager, Autonomous Driving

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TRAINING

  • Master’s degree or above in Robotics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electronic Engineering, or related fields, with extensive experience in autonomous driving algorithm development across perception, planning, and control.
  • Expert-level candidates should demonstrate technical leadership and/or publications in top-tier academic conferences.
  • Candidates must have a GPA of 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • Prior industry experience in robotics or autonomous driving is preferred

KNOWLEDGE

  • Basics of robotics, including localization, mapping, perception, and control
  • Knowledge of autonomous vehicle architectures and sensor fusion
  • Exposure to middleware frameworks like ROS (Robot Operating System)
  • Understanding of image processing, object detection, or deep learning

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Proficiency in programming languages: C++, Python, and MATLAB/Simulink/ Stateflow
  • Proficiency in robotics-related software: ROS, ROS2, PyTorch, Carla, OpenCV, Autoware, YOLO
  • Proficiency in project & issue tracking tool: JIRA, Confluence
  • Proficiency in version control management tool: GitHub
  • Valid driver license with good record

PHYSICAL STANDARDS
