Job description

Founded in 1999 in the beautiful Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, Cadre5 provides innovative technical solutions to our customers locally and nationally. Our Cadre5 Lab Partners division has partnered with the Workflows and Ecosystem Services (WES) group within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to recruit a Software Engineer. You will support to the Workflows and Ecosystem Services (WES) group at ORNL/NCCS across a portfolio of Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), American Science Cloud (AmSC), and Genesis Mission initiatives. This role will support multiple, related initiatives, including but not limited to cross-facility workflows between OLCF and other DOE facilities, the ExaDigiT Digital Twin, the Observatory, and other scientific workflows.

ORNL delivers scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs needed to realize solutions in energy and national security and provides economic benefit to the nation. This premier research institution located near Knoxville in Oak Ridge, TN, addresses national needs through impactful research and world-leading research centers.

This is a full-time, position that requires on-site work.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Cross-Facility Workflow Development (OLCF and Other DOE Facilities)
    • Design, develop, and test prototypes for an ESnet EJFAT-enabled cross-facility workflow system.
    • Plan, test, and deploy the associated software and system components, including configuration and secure access.
    • Benchmark performance, evaluate results, and support continuous operation of cross-facility workflows.
  • Observatory Full-Stack Development
    • Support full-stack development of the Observatory platform, including front‑end, back‑end, and data pipeline components as prioritized.
    • Contribute to data quality assessment and preprocessing workflows for heterogeneous HPC telemetry feeding the Observatory.
  • ExaDigiT Digital Twin Development
    • Contribute to the ExaDigiT dashboard and AR/VR visualization efforts, including work with NVIDIA Omniverse and Apple Vision Pro, as capacity allows.
  • Other Scientific Workflows and AI-Readiness Support
    • Support other scientific and agentic workflow tools within the WES portfolio (for example, data‑readiness and curation tooling), as prioritized.
    • Provide general full-stack development support to WES‑led tools and dashboards outside the specific systems as workload requires.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in front‑end or full-stack development
  • Full‑stack development experience (front‑end and back‑end), with Python REST API development and API testing/debugging (Postman, pytest, curl).
  • Knowledge of authentication and authorization patterns such as OAuth, API keys, and identity management.
  • Working knowledge of cloud and identity security concepts, including access gateways and resource access controls.
  • Knowledge of scientific‑workflow and HPC familiarity to understand how AmSC, Observatory, and related data and services interact with OLCF systems.
  • Experience with simulation frameworks, or the ability to quickly learn Python based simulation and scenario‑modeling stack.
  • Broad technical judgment and the ability to work productively across multiple concurrent work areas with limited day‑to‑day supervision.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance is required. This requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with NVIDIA Omniverse and Apple Vision Pro development is a plus for AR/VR visualization work.
