What is the difference between Assistant Aircraft Reliability Engineer vs Aircraft Reliability Engineer?

AspectAssistant Aircraft Reliability EngineerAircraft Reliability Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering; certifications like FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) are commonRequires similar credentials, often with more experience; may hold additional certifications or licenses
Work EnvironmentSupports reliability teams, assists with data analysis, and performs inspections under supervisionLeads reliability assessments, analyzes failure data, and makes recommendations for maintenance improvements
Industry UsageCommonly employed in airline maintenance departments, aerospace manufacturing, and repair stationsUsed in similar settings, often with more responsibility for reliability programs and process improvements

The main difference between an Assistant Aircraft Reliability Engineer and an Aircraft Reliability Engineer lies in experience and responsibility. The assistant role supports and assists with reliability tasks, while the engineer takes on more independent analysis and decision-making. Both roles require relevant technical credentials and work in similar environments within the aerospace industry.

Do you need a degree to be an assistant aircraft reliability engineer?

A degree is often preferred for an assistant aircraft reliability engineer position, typically in fields like aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or related disciplines. However, relevant work experience, technical skills, and certifications such as FAA or EASA training can also be valuable qualifications for this role.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) applies an interdisciplinary engineering approach to 'whole system' design by defining requirements, analysis, verification, and validation with modeling and simulation tools using industry best standards, in place of the documentation used for traditional Systems Engineering.  Applies Systems Engineering principles as defined by the Warfighting Acquisition University (WARU) Systems Engineering Process Model to a system throughout its life cycle, from development through production, deployment, training support, operation, and disposal--as defined by customer requirements.

Applies a logical sequence of activities and decisions that transforms an operational need into a description of system performance parameters and a preferred system configuration. The Model-Based Systems Engineer works together with project managers and the engineering team to ensure that design work aligns with customer requirements in a way that can be verified early in the design process. The MBSE also works through each phase of the given system and process, from plan along with expansion to validation and operation, on measurable risk assessment, regularly concentrating on performance, testing, scheduling, and budgets.

The MBSE uses a digital engineering approach to develop a system-of-systems model that serves as the authoritative source of truth during design, development, sustainment and retirement of a system.  The Model-Based Systems Engineer is also central to the development of Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) requirements and design.

This role satisfies Defense program contractual requirements which are referenced in the WARU Systems Engineering Guidebook

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • ModelBased Systems Engineering & Architecture

    • Develop, integrate, and maintain SysMLv2based system architectures using tools such as CAMEO to support requirements definition, behavioral modeling, interface design, and system verification.

    • Train coworkers on CAMEO best practices to promote standardization and efficiency.

    • Establish and manage a persistent digital thread that links requirements, architectures, design data, analyses, simulations, verification artifacts, and configuration baselines.

    • Create and evolve digital twin models to support performance prediction, design trades, reliability assessments, and simulationbased decision making.

    • Apply Warfighting Acquisition University (WARU) Systems Engineering Fundamentals and Systems Engineering Guidebook throughout the system life cycle, ensuring disciplined and compliant engineering processes.

  • Requirements Development & Management

    • Translate customer needs, mission objectives, concept of operations (CONOPS), and stakeholder expectations into measurable system and performance requirements.

    • Use MBSE tools to maintain requirements traceability from toplevel mission needs down to subsystem specifications and test objectives.

    • Ensure FAA, MIL-HDBK 516, Foreign Military Airworthiness Authorities, and other certification requirements are integrated into models, requirement sets, and verification plans.

    • Manage requirements database for all projects using IBM DOORS requirements database.

    • Document requirements in aircraft requirements documents, system requirements documents, and performance specifications.  Includes but not limited to:

      • Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP)

      • System Requirements Document (SRD)

      • Sub-System Requirements Document (SSRD)

      • Aircraft Description Document (ADD)

      • Test and Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP)

    • Conduct requirements traceability analyses, develop and maintain requirements traceability matrix.

    • Prepare for, support and advise functional disciplines in conduct of Functional Configuration Audits and requirement compliance activities.

  • Technical Leadership & Decision Support

    • Lead and conduct technical design reviews including, but not limited to, System Requirements Reviews (SRR), Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Desing Reviews (CDR), Technical Readiness Reviews (TRR), providing modelbased evidence, architecture rationale, and quantitative technical risk insights.

    • Facilitate system trade studies and architecture analyses using modelcentric approaches to evaluate alternatives across cost, schedule, performance, MOSA compliance, and digital integration.

    • Provide technical direction to crossfunctional teams, ensuring engineering decisions are grounded in model data, system requirements, and verified architectural integrity.

  • Digital Engineering & MOSA Implementation

    • Drive Textron Aviation's digital transformation by developing and promoting MBSE methods, reusable models, modeling standards, and best practices.

    • Implement Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) principles in system models, interface designs, and architecture artifacts to improve modularity, interoperability, and lifecycle sustainment.

    • Champion the migration from documentcentric processes to modelbased, datadriven engineering, helping teams adopt digital workflows and new competencies.

  • Lifecycle Integration & Program Execution

    • Support propulsion, avionics, software, structures, payloads, and mission systems teams by ensuring model accuracy, interface consistency, and endtoend system traceability.

    • Collaborate with project managers to align technical baselines, risk profiles, schedule drivers, and earned value measures with the modelbased architecture.

    • Contribute to proposal development through early modeling of system concepts, capability decomposition, risk identification, and requirements definition.

    • and developing implementation plans

  • Proposal Development

    • Ensure requirements are known in the early stages of the proposal process to support internal and supplier statements of work and requirements documentation.
