Job description

Description
The Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) in the Gallogly College of Engineering at the University of Oklahoma invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position starting Fall 2026. We seek applications with emphasis in the area of neural engineering including but not limited to neuromodulation and noninvasive therapeutics, neurorehabilitation, and smart/personalized neurotechnology. Candidates that meet these areas of interest should emphasize human/patient-based research, new methods for sensing or imaging, especially AI or data-driven approaches, and clinical collaboration and applications. Significant value is placed on research areas synergistic with the existing strengths in SBME. Competitive candidates will be effective communicators who value translational research, are committed to excellence in teaching, and contribute positively to our collaborative community.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent, externally funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biomedical engineering, and mentor students. SBME's mission is to educate the next generation of biomedical engineers and to create new technologies that advance human health. Founded in 2016, SBME is committed to undergraduate and graduate education, offering B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs in Biomedical Engineering. We moved into the new Gallogly Hall in 2019, providing state-of-the-art lab spaces for faculty and students. Our faculty of 22 works with approximately 282 undergraduates and 64 graduate students.
The University of Oklahoma (OU) is a Carnegie-R1 comprehensive public research university known for excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. Serving educational, cultural, economic, and healthcare needs from campuses in Norman, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa, OU enrolls over 30,000 students and employs more than 2,700 full-time faculty members across 20 colleges. SBME faculty and students enjoy extensive partnerships with scientists and clinicians at the OU Health Campus (OUHC/OU Health), the OU Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology (IBEST), the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF), the Oklahoma Center for Geroscience and Healthy Brain Aging, the Laureate Institute for Brain Research (LIBR) in Tulsa, and the strategic 10-year Value Partnership between OU Health and Siemens Healthineers. These collaborations provide ample opportunities for interdisciplinary research and access to cutting-edge facilities and resources.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Doctoral Degree: A Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field including, but not limited to, engineering, physics, data or systems science, neuroscience, mathematical or quantitative science.
  • Research Excellence: Demonstrated expertise in neuroengineering with a strong record of first-author publications in relevant areas and with a strong commitment to research. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate the capability to build an independent, externally funded research program.
  • Commitment to Education and Teaching: Experience in teaching at the undergraduate level; demonstration of independent teaching experience is desirable.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Effective Communication Skills: Demonstrated ability to communicate research and teaching concepts clearly and effectively to varied audiences.
  • Community Engagement: Interest in participating in community outreach or educational programs that enhance the visibility and impact of SBME.
  • Engagement with Strategic Partnerships: Interest in leveraging collaborations with SBME's partners-such as the OU Health Campus (OUHC), OU Health, the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology (IBEST), the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF), the Laureate Institute for Brain Research (LIBR), and others-to enhance research and educational initiatives.
  • Translation and Innovation: Experience in entrepreneurship and innovation, such as involvement in patent applications, startups, commercialization of research, or collaborations with industry partners. Familiarity with FDA processes and regulations is advantageous. Formal training or participation in programs focused on translating research into clinical or commercial applications is highly valued, along with an interest in leveraging collaborations with SBME's strategic partners to enhance initiatives.

Application Instructions
Upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information of four references to be used with your permission at apply.interfolio.com/178607. The cover letter may address examples of the candidate's approach to research, teaching, and service; it may also include plans for future contributions to research, as well as plans/goals for teaching at the University of Oklahoma. A review of the applications will begin January 12, 2026 and will continue until final selections are made. Salary and benefits are nationally competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Competitive start-up packages will be available. Nominations or inquiries may be sent to Prof. Han Yuan, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, hanyuan@ou.edu.
