Job Description
The Asset Strategy Leader (ASL) serves as the matrix leader with overall, enterprise wide accountability for an asset from discovery to end of life cycle.
• Chairs an Asset Strategy Team (AST) and ensures alignment across the five core deliverable teams (Integrated Evidence, Value & Access, Brand , Label & Regulatory, and Product Presentation & Device) partnering effectively with the functional chairs of those subteams to ensure delivery of the asset. In this capacity, serves as the enterprise leader who is the asset's primary point of contact for AbbVie's Pipeline Commercialization Model (PCM) Governance bodies and senior management.
• Leads the effort to create, articulate, and gain endorsement of an integrated cross-functional strategy for all aspects of product development and commercialization, consistent with the overall strategy articulated by PCM Governance and the Therapeutic Area Strategy Council (TASC). Maintains primary responsibility for the ensuing deliverables, including a functionally aligned asset and brand strategy.
• Builds strong collaborative relationships with governance team members and executives to enable optimal timely, multi-directional, and comprehensive interactions with PCM Governance at pre-specified milestones and as significant program issues or opportunities arise.
• Reviews and analyzes emerging data objectively to lead the Asset Strategy Team toward recommendations that highlight opportunities, address potential risks, and proactively provide appropriate mitigations.
• Understands the role and value of each function on the team, to know how to solicit timely input. Seeks assistance from AST functions to ensure the asset is appropriately resourced and stays within allocated budget, and champions requests for incremental resources, when appropriate. Works continually with supporting teams to ensure that executed plans are consistent with all elements of the asset and brand strategy.
• Ensures that the AST continually validates the viability of the program from a scientific and commercial perspective. Develops clear, prospective Go/No-Go decision points and serves as a champion for the program, using objectivity and judgment to analyze, interpret, and present data to PCM Governance and senior management.
• Establishes close, ongoing ties, with all team members and supporting teams, to ensure appropriate empowerment, delegation, and alignment. Maintains a function-neutral position in prioritizing actions and making decisions, with an eye toward optimizing asset value in a timely and high-quality fashion. Coaches and mentors team members as appropriate. Enables the AST to focus on strategy and decision-making, and optimal communication of issues to supporting teams, team members, and functions.
• Represents the AST at interactions with external parties (e.g., Advisory Boards, regulatory interactions) when these engagements require broad cross-functional contributions. Communicates clearly with governance bodies.
• Works with team members to maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the competitive environment in the field and to assess for potential impact on ongoing programs. Stays abreast of professional information, industry trends, and emerging technology through conferences, medical literature, and other available training, to augment expertise in drug development and the pharmaceutical industry.
• Typically leads an early phase asset (Phase I or II) or partners with a more experienced ASL in leading components of a complex asset
Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree required; Advanced degree highly preferred (e.g. PhD, MBA).
• Relevant experience (minimum of 5 years; 10+ years preferred) in a pharmaceutical/biotech setting with deep expertise in a relevant discipline associated with drug development and /or commercialization and ideally experienced in multiple areas of the industry.
• Strong strategic thinking, collaboration, facilitative leadership, executive function, and problem-solving skills. Ability to assimilate new knowledge rapidly and apply that to asset strategy.
• Experience leading a team in a cross-functional environment, preferably with a global scope.
• Ability to objectively exercise judgment and create pragmatic solutions to address complex cross-functional problems, and to be accountable for obtaining stakeholder advice to make informed decisions, in order to move a program forward in the face of uncertainty or incomplete data.
• Ability to lead and motivate team members from across functional areas; must be able to lead through influence and bring out the best in others. Ability to delegate appropriate accountability and decision-making to supporting teams and functions.
