Job Purpose/Summary

The role will leverage in-depth accounting experience to independently manage complex journal entries, detailed account reconciliations, and variance analysis for a variety of areas. This role will take a lead in cross-functional transactions (acquisitions, divestitures, and joint venture formations), impairment analysis, asset retirement obligations, regulatory filings, and various other special projects within the Financial Accounting group. Mentor less-experienced staff. Position will interact with the entire accounting group as well as commercial, operations, marketing, executive management, FP&A, and joint venture partners.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage and account for other long-term assets, including recording amortization of intangible assets. Communicate, as needed, with various groups to gain understanding of balances and activity.

  • Account for transactions (acquisitions, divestitures, and joint venture formations), including identifying relevant fixed asset records and coordinating with the fixed asset group. May also coordinate requests with counterparts and various groups at Plains. Review and summarize legal agreements.

  • Periodically gather updated information from various groups and refresh or calculate new asset retirement obligation calculations and assess for potential impairments. Use experience to translate information received to potential accounting impact.

  • Assist in completing certain regulatory filings in accordance with established process and standards.

  • Independently provide support to auditors, both internal and external, by gathering documentation and responding to audit inquiries.

  • Conduct technical accounting research and documentation, including drafting policies and procedures.

  • Manage multiple overlapping special projects aimed at improving financial processes and operational efficiency.

  • Leverage existing relationships with other accounting or other groups at Plains to answer questions timely, share information, and provide guidance.

  • Prepare agendas, coordinate, and conduct meetings with various groups (operations, legal, planning) including directors and vice presidents. Ensure work is completed for any action items or follow-up questions. Communicate results and decisions to relevant parties.

  • Mentor less-experienced staff to achieve a high-level of accuracy in record keeping and reporting

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting

  • 3-6 years of relevant accounting experience, strongly prefer public accounting experience.

  • CPA license preferred, or testing nearly complete

  • Detailed knowledge of GAAP and experience working with other departments, such as financial reporting.

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills and copilot.

  • Ability to work independently within established guidelines and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Experience improving processes/leveraging AI tools

  • Cleared criminal history (background) and satisfactory reference checks

  • Compliance with the Company's drug and alcohol policy including pre-employment D&A testing.
