What You Will Do
This position will be filled at the Engineering Technologist 1/ Engineering Technologist 2, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Engineering Technologist 1 ($87,800.00 - $143,000.00)
As an Engineering Technologist for the Advanced Sources and Detectors (ASD) Project, you will work to assemble and test Inductive Voltage Adder (IVA) Cells, Scorpius Accelerator Cells (SACs), and Lower Electronics Assemblies (LEA). In addition, you will help to improve procedures, prepare assembly part kits, operate high-voltage test bed equipment, and work with engineers and scientists to review testing data.
The accelerator components produced at LANL will become part of the Scorpius accelerator located at the Principle Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experiments (PULSE) facility at Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS). This position may include some travel to NNSS or to other participating laboratories or vendors.
Engineering Technologist 2 ($96,600.00 - $158,000.00)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level may provide directions to technicians. Able to work independently and as part of a team. Utilizes engineering and computer technology to accomplish work.
Job Duties
As an ASD Engineering technologist, you will be responsible for the following:
  • Fabrication, assembly, and testing of Accelerator components.
    • Work closely with the lead production engineer on work associated with assembly.
    • Work with other production teams as well as deployed safety personnel.
    • Ensure components have been inspected and staged, ready for use.
    • Ensure quality assurance and DOE Order 413.3B project requirements.
    • Look for opportunities to enhance the assembly process.
  • Work with the technical team to coordinate opportunities and efficiencies between the subsystems.
  • Provide maintenance support for major personnel and equipment.
  • Work closely with technicians and engineers from our own and other assembly teams within the facility.
  • Interact and collaborate effectively with internal and external colleagues at the team, group, division, and laboratory levels.
  • Complete all training in a reasonable time.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Technologist 1
  • Basic knowledge of drawings and GD&T.
  • Basic knowledge of SolidWorks and Creo to design and fabricate components.
  • Experience assembling and disassembling parts from drawings and procedures.
  • Knowledge of common lab test equipment: digital multi-meters, profilometers, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.
  • Familiar with vacuum systems (KF flanges, CF flanges, roughing pumps, and turbomolecular pumps) and leak detection.
  • Swagelok, plumbing NPT for PVC pipe fitting, and ANSI and metric threads.
Engineering Technologist 2
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires the following:
  • Experience leading assembly and integration of accelerator components.
  • Experience performing leak detection using helium and mass spectrometry.
  • Experience identifying and documenting non-conformances (NCRs) to ensure quality requirements are met.
  • Experience in planning and executing critical lifts.
  • Experience mentoring and training other technologists in the procedures or tools of assembly.

Educational Requirements
Engineering Technologist 1
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Engineering Technologist 2
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications
  • Current forklift and crane certification.
  • Experience working with drawings and procedures.
  • Understanding disciplined operations.
  • Knowledge of accelerator systems and components.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM USA. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
