Application Instructions
The Preventative Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for performing scheduled maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs on heavy equipment and support vehicles used in road construction operations. This field-based role travels to active job sites to help keep paving, grading, earthmoving, and hauling equipment safe, reliable, and available for production while reducing unplanned downtime.
Position Description
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on heavy construction equipment, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, fluid checks, battery service, and replacement of wear items.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment such as pavers, rollers, graders, loaders, skid steers, excavators, bulldozers, milling machines, service trucks, pickups, and trailers.
  • Conduct daily and scheduled inspections to identify mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and safety-related issues before they lead to breakdowns.
  • Troubleshoot minor equipment problems in the field and complete basic repairs or coordinate larger repairs with the shop or supervisor.
  • Use diagnostic tools, service manuals, and maintenance checklists to perform work accurately and efficiently.
  • Document maintenance performed, repairs completed, parts used, and equipment hours/mileage in company records or fleet systems.
  • Communicate equipment condition, upcoming service needs, and downtime risks to supervisors, operators, and the maintenance team.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area on job sites and in service trucks.
  • Follow company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and all applicable DOT, OSHA, and environmental requirements.
  • Support emergency or after-hours service needs during peak construction schedules when required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training in diesel, automotive, or heavy equipment maintenance preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience performing preventative maintenance or repairs on heavy equipment, trucks, or construction machinery preferred.
  • Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, brakes, tires, and preventative maintenance practices.
  • Ability to read service manuals, inspection forms, and parts information.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL or ability to obtain one is a plus.
  • Basic welding, cutting, and fabrication skills are a plus.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, lifting devices, and diagnostic equipment safely.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, reliability, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and coordinate effectively with crews and supervisors.

Position Requirements
  • Work is performed primarily in the field on active road construction sites and occasionally in a shop environment.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in uneven outdoor conditions for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift and carry parts, tools, and materials up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, grease, weather, vibration, and moving equipment is common.
  • Schedule may include early mornings, overtime, weekends, and travel between job sites based on project demands.
Preferred Experience
Experience supporting asphalt paving crews, grading operations, or aggregate hauling fleets is strongly preferred. Candidates with knowledge of preventative maintenance scheduling, equipment inspections, and field service practices in a road construction environment will be especially successful in this role.
