Job Title ASL (American Sign Language) Specialist Program READS Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Program Communication skills

Excellent communication skills required in both ASL and written English

Superior ASL proficiency rating on the SLPI or other comparable exam

Proficient English skills (reading / writing)

Certification/Licensure ASLTA certification or MA DESE Educator License as Foreign Language (ASL), Teacher of the Deaf (ASL/TC), related field,  or eligible for licensure. Job Description

Full time ASL Specialist for the READS DHH Program located in the town of Norton and within Norton Public Schools with an additional program within the Bristol-Plymouth Technical High School. The core job responsibilities will include, but not limited to: 

  • Evaluate students' ASL skills and determine the level of intervention needed.
  • Consultation to DHH Staff, host building educators, and parents/guardians as needed
  • Providing direct ASL instruction (individual, small or large group) to READS DHH students based on the presented caseload .
  • Provide written input to IEPs (goals, progress notes, etc.) as well as updates at Team meetings when needed.
  • Provide ASL training, as needed, for staff in the areas of ASL instruction and evaluation.
  • Provide consultation and/or ASL training to students' families as needed.
  • Provide support to READS DHH Early Intervention initiatives as needed
  • Occasional home/ district visits may be necessary to support students' families and support the referral and eligibility process.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records
  • Other responsibilities as requested by the DHH Program Director or the READS Collaborative Executive Director
Required skills
  • Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred
  • Background and knowledge of ASL linguistics and Deaf culture
  • Experience working with students who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Knowledge of language development, communication modalities, and augmentative alternate communication (AAC) or willingness to learn and collaborate.
  • Experience working with students with additional disabilities
  • Ability to communicate and consult effectively and professionally with DHH and host school multidisciplinary staff to foster student growth and integration opportunities where appropriate
  • Ability to administer and complete professionally written reports for ASL student evaluations when needed.
  • Ability to create and implement creative and engaging ASL lesson plans for individual, small, and whole group instruction.
  • Knowledge of appropriate technology necessary for instruction, communicating with families, and coordinating with school personnel
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in educating students that include promoting the social and emotional well-being of children
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge of MA curriculum frameworks, or willingness to learn
  • Physical ability and willingness to execute job responsibilities 
Salary Based on experience and education according to READS Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement $61,950 - $103,740 Start Date: August 25, 2026 Job Closing Date June 16th, 2026 or when filled
