What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in an AS400 role?

This includes troubleshooting system and application issues, developing or modifying programs using RPG or COBOL, managing system backups, and ensuring data security. Regular collaboration with end-users, business analysts, and other IT team members is common to address business needs and system enhancements. Staying updated on software patches and coordinating upgrades is also an integral part of the job. These tasks help ensure that business operations run smoothly and minimize downtime for critical enterprise applications.

What is the future of AS400?

While newer technologies are emerging, many organizations maintain legacy systems, and professionals with skills in RPG, CL, and IBM i administration remain in demand for system maintenance and modernization projects.

Is AS400 still in demand?

How much do AS400 programmers make?

AS400 programmers typically earn between $70,000 and $110,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in RPG or CL programming may earn higher salaries. Compensation can also vary based on the industry and company size.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the AS400 position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AS400 professional, you need strong knowledge of IBM iSeries/AS400 systems, proficiency in RPG, CL, and COBOL programming languages, and experience in system administration or application development. Familiarity with tools such as IBM Navigator for i, DB2, and relevant certifications like IBM Certified System Administrator – Power Systems are highly valuable.
