What is artist management?

Artist management refers to the professional service of guiding and representing artists in their careers. An artist manager handles various aspects such as contract negotiations, promotional activities, scheduling, and building relationships within the industry. Managers help artists make strategic decisions, secure opportunities, and ensure their creative and financial interests are protected. Their goal is to maximize an artist’s potential and success while allowing the artist to focus on their craft.

How does an artist manager balance creative vision with business objectives when representing talent?

An Artist Manager acts as the bridge between an artist's creative aspirations and the practical demands of the industry. This often involves advocating for the artist's vision during negotiations while also ensuring that business decisions—such as contract terms, scheduling, and branding—support sustainable career growth. Managers regularly collaborate with agents, record labels, and promoters, requiring strong communication and negotiation skills. Striking this balance is a common challenge, but it’s essential for long-term artist success and maintaining positive working relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in artist management, and why are they important?

To thrive in Artist Management, you need a solid understanding of the music or entertainment industry, contract negotiation, and business administration, often supported by a degree in music business, management, or related fields. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as booking software, project management platforms, and digital marketing analytics is highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, networking, and organizational skills help build strong relationships and effectively coordinate an artist's career. These abilities are crucial for successfully guiding artists, maximizing opportunities, and navigating the complex entertainment landscape.

What is the difference between Artist Management vs Artist Booking Agent?

In summary, Artist Management focuses on guiding an artist's overall career, while Artist Booking Agents specialize in securing live performance opportunities. Both roles are essential but serve different functions within an artist's professional team.

How much money do artist managers make?

Artist managers typically earn a commission of 15% to 20% of their clients' gross income, which can result in annual earnings ranging from $30,000 to over $100,000 depending on the success of the artists they represent. Income varies based on experience, client roster, and industry connections, with some managers earning significantly more in high-profile cases.

What does artist management do?

Artist management involves overseeing the careers of artists, including coordinating bookings, negotiating contracts, developing promotional strategies, and managing schedules. Managers serve as a liaison between artists and industry professionals, often requiring strong communication and organizational skills. They help artists achieve their career goals by providing guidance and support throughout their professional activities.

What jobs can I get with an artist management degree?

With an artist management degree, you can pursue roles such as artist manager, talent agent, booking agent, or music industry coordinator. These positions involve coordinating artist careers, negotiating contracts, and managing schedules, often requiring strong communication, organizational skills, and industry knowledge.

Job description

Audio Engineer – The Building 967

The Building 967 is seeking an experienced, dependable, and motivated Audio Engineer to join our growing music and entertainment team.

PRO TOOLS EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION. Applicants must be able to confidently operate Pro Tools and conduct a professional recording session without needing basic training on the software.

We work heavily within the Hip-Hop and Rap music community, but we welcome and record all genres of music, including R&B, Pop, Gospel, Rock, and more. Our studio can sometimes be a fast-paced, high-energy, and intense environment, so applicants must be comfortable working with different personalities, artist entourages, producers, managers, and other entertainment professionals.

The engineer must be able to remain calm, professional, respectful, and focused under pressure while maintaining a productive recording environment.

Studio Environment

The Building 967 operates from a private residential-style recording studio designed to provide artists with a comfortable and creative experience. The property includes a full kitchen, bedrooms/lounge areas, two bathrooms, outdoor space, and additional amenities for extended recording sessions and creative projects.

Responsibilities

  • Professionally record and engineer artists using Pro Tools.
  • Set up and operate microphones, audio interfaces, preamps, headphones, monitors, and other studio equipment.
  • Create and manage Pro Tools sessions from beginning to completion.
  • Record, edit, comp, arrange, and process vocals.
  • Apply EQ, compression, reverb, delay, Auto-Tune/pitch correction, and other commonly used vocal effects when appropriate.
  • Mix vocals and prepare professional-quality recordings.
  • Properly label, organize, save, export, and back up sessions and audio files.
  • Assist artists with microphone technique and vocal performance.
  • Work primarily with Hip-Hop and Rap artists while being capable of engineering all genres of music.
  • Remain professional during high-energy or high-pressure sessions.
  • Communicate effectively with artists, producers, managers, and Building 967 management.
  • Prepare the studio before sessions and reset the recording area afterward.
  • Keep studio equipment and work areas clean and organized.
  • Troubleshoot common Pro Tools, microphone, interface, computer, cable, plug-in, and audio-routing issues.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding artists, unreleased music, sessions, and company information.
  • Be available for scheduled sessions, including some evenings, nights, and weekends.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be proficient in Pro Tools.
  • Must have previous audio engineering or recording experience.
  • Must understand recording, signal flow, microphone setup, gain staging, vocal processing, EQ, compression, plug-ins, and basic mixing.
  • Must be capable of independently running a recording session.
  • Must be comfortable working in a Hip-Hop-focused environment while respecting and working with artists from all musical genres.
  • Must be dependable, punctual, organized, professional, and respectful.
  • Must be able to remain calm and focused in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have strong communication and customer-service skills.
  • Must respect studio equipment, artists, guests, and company property.
  • Must understand the importance of artist privacy and confidentiality.
  • Must be willing to learn, improve, and grow with The Building 967.

About The Building 967

The Building 967 is more than a recording studio. We are a growing entertainment and creative company involved in music recording, artist development, artist management, media production, content creation, events, and community programs.

We are looking for an engineer who wants to become part of the Building 967 team and grow with the company. The right candidate may have opportunities to work with developing and established artists, producers, content creators, and other entertainment professionals.

If you know Pro Tools, understand how to work with artists, can handle a high-energy studio environment, and take your craft seriously, we want to hear from you.
